I’ll admit that I’m not a huge fan of long-running shonen series. For the most part, the endless battles and powering up processes get on my nerves. This isn’t a 100% rule though, because every once in a while I find a series that manages to capture my attention and imagination for dozens of weeks; Hunter x Hunter was one of those series, which is why I’m pumped to report on this bit of news.
In an announcement posted to their official blog on Monday, July 27th, Funimation revealed that they will add the first 75 episodes of the 2011 shonen series Hunter x Hunter (in both subbed and dubbed formats) on Friday, July 31st!
It’s worth noting that this is not the Hunter x Hunter that was released in 1999 that only ran for 62 episodes, this is the most recent anime adaptation which ran for over 150 episodes starting in the early part of the last decade.
Funimation describes the series as:
Young Gon dreams of following in his father’s path and becoming a Hunter, an elite class of adventurer with legendary skills. But to make the grade he’ll first have to pass the extremely difficult and dangerous Hunter Qualification Exam.
His journey leads him on the shared path of the Hunter’s exam, to lands beyond imagination, and to friends who grow closer with each new trial. As the difficulty of the challenges mounts, will Gon and his friends prevail or will they wash out like so many others?
Originally a manga series created by Yoshihiro Togashi, the series first began its serialization in 1998 and has been collected into 36 volumes in Japan as of 2018. Unfortunately, this series has also become not so affectionately dubbed as “Hiatus x Hiatus” by fans who constantly find themselves waiting for a new chapter to be published, which can take months or even years to appear due to the author delaying new chapters.
