While you might know Hiromu Arakawa from Fullmetal Alchemist, others might know her from Silver Spoon, while others might know her from her manga adaptation of The Heroic Legend of Arslan (all three of which received multiple anime adaptations, by the way). Regardless of how you know her, it’s almost impossible to be a major fan of manga without being at least familiar with her reputation, if not her actual work.
The good news is that in the December 2021 issue of Shonen Gangan magazine, the editorial staff revealed that Ms. Arakawa is working on a brand new series that will debut in the January 2022 issue set to hit newsstands in Japan on December 10th!
The new work is titled Yomi no Tsugai and stars a pair of fraternal twins named Yuru and Asa. Yuru spends most of his time hunting birds and being one with nature while Asa takes care of their home in the remote, quiet, mountain village in which they live. One day, Asa is called upon to serve at the village jail which will also confine her there. From there, Yuru starts to unravel the mystery surrounding his village.
The better news is that Shonen Gangan magazine is a Square Enix imprint and with Arakawa already having a solid reputation for quality storytelling around the world, you can bet that there are already plans in place to release this new series around the world at some point in the future. Now we just get to play the waiting game.
If you happen to be in the minority of anime and manga fans who have somehow never come across a manga penned by Arakawa or an anime that adapts one of her works, I highly recommend seeking out some of her work and basking in it. My particular favorite is Silver Spoon but honestly, when it comes to her works, there’s really no wrong answer to choose from.
