Fans of gourmet food and shonen tournament arcs have a new reason to celebrate as it’s been revealed at the latest Jump Festa event that Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Sōma will be returning for a fifth television anime season in April! The new season will be titled Shokugeki no Sōma: Gō no Sara (Strong Plate). The “Go” in the title is a pun, as that’s how you say ‘five’ in Japanese.
Originally a manga written by Yūto Tsukuda and illustrated by Shun Saeki, which ran in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from November 2012 to June 2019, Food Wars was collected in 36 volumes with the final one hitting store shelves in October 2019. The manga series got its first taste of anime success with a 24 episode first season which began airing in April 2015. This was followed by three more seasons, making four in total, which ran for an additional 49 episodes. The most recent season premiered in October 2019 and featured animation from J.C. Staff, with Yoshitomo Yonetani returning as director along with Shogo Yasukawa in charge of series composition. All four seasons of the television seasons were simulcast by Crunchyroll and the first three seasons have been licensed for home video by Sentai Filmworks.
Viz Media holds the English language license to the manga series and describes the plot of Food Wars as:
Soma Yukihira’s old man runs a small family restaurant in the less savory end of town. Aiming to one day surpass his father’s culinary prowess, Soma hones his skills day in and day out until one day, out of the blue, his father decides to enroll Soma in a classy culinary school! Can Soma really cut it in a school that prides itself on a 10 percent graduation rate? And can he convince the beautiful, domineering heiress of the school that he belongs there at all?!
