Another movie which was set to premiere at some point this year but never materialized is the first of a six-movie series for the hit Victorian spy series, Princess Principal. First announced back in April 2018, we all waited patiently for news to arrive but it never did until just this past weekend.
In the announcement, we got all the juicy details that we’ve been craving ever since the television series finished airing at the end of summer 2017. First off, the premiere date for the movie, titled Princess Principal Crown Handler, has been pushed back to April 10th, 2020.

In terms of the cast and crew, four out of the five leads will remain the same, with the only change being Aoi Koga replacing Ayaka Imamura as Ange because of Imamura’s 2018 retirement from the industry, for health reasons.
The crew is also largely staying the same, with the only changes being that studio Actas will produce the animation by themselves and Noboru Kimura will step in for Ichiro Okouchi as the scriptwriter. Beyond that, we still have Masaki Tachibana as director and Yuki Kajiura composing the background music.
The series originally streamed on Amazon but was eventually picked up by Sentai Filmworks for an English release. They describe the story as:
At the end of the 19th century, London, the Kingdom of Albion has been split into East and West sides by a giant wall. Five girls attend Queen’s Mayfaire, a conventional and prestigious school. Under the guise of regular high school girls, they act as spies under cover. Disguise, reconnaissance, infiltration, car chases… Each girl uses their own set of special skills to dart around the world of shadow.
What made the Princess Principal series unique at the time of its release, is that the series aired their episodes out of storytelling order much like The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya or Rental Magica did when they aired. This created a whole new experience for viewers which required them to go back and watch the episodes again in chronological order to piece together the clues dropped along the way.
