I’ve got great news for those of you who enjoy hard science and random shonen shouting!
Back in early July, I reported that season two of the hit anime adaptation of the Weekly Shonen Jump series, Dr. Stone, was set to premiere in 2021. Now we have a solid update to share with all of you.
On Friday, September 4th, Funimation and Crunchyroll revealed that both streaming services will offer a Dr. Stone season two simulcast this coming January 2021, with Crunchyroll streaming the subbed version while Funimation will stream the dubbed version.
To celebrate the news, the creators of the manga created some special season two artwork which is more than worth checking out in detail!
Originally a manga written by Riichiro Inagaki and illustrated by Boichi, Dr. Stone first began serializing in the pages of Weekly Shonen Jump in March 2017. It would go on to win the shonen category at the Shogakukan Manga Awards in 2019. In July 2019, an anime adaptation produced by TMS Entertainment began broadcasting.
The first anime season featured Shinya Iino as the director, working off scripts written by Yuichiro Kido, while the background music was a team effort between Tatsuya Kato, Hiroaki Tsutsumi, and Yuki Kanesaka. The second season is officially titled Dr. Stone: Stone Wars, as it will follow the Stone Wars arc from the manga series.
Viz Media currently publishes the manga in English and they describe the plot of the first volume of Dr. Stone as:
One fateful day, all of humanity was petrified by a blinding flash of light. After several millennia, high schooler Taiju awakens and finds himself lost in a world of statues. However, he’s not alone! His science-loving friend Senku’s been up and running for a few months and he’s got a grand plan in mind — to kickstart civilization with the power of science!
