Get ready for a bloody good time with the very first promotional video for the upcoming anime adaptation of Chainsaw Man!
Premiering at the MAPPA Stage 2021 – 10th Anniversary event on Sunday, June 27th, the promotional video introduces a lot of the main characters along with some bloody action towards the end. Check it out and then learn who will bring this series to life.
Studio MAPPA is producing the animation with Ryu Nakayama serving as the director and Makoto Nakazono as the chief episode director. They will work off scripts written by Hiroshi Seko, character designs by Kazutaka Sugiyama, and devil designs from Kiyotaka Oshiyama. The background music will be composed by Kensuke Ushio.
Originally a manga series created by Tatsuki Fujimoto, the series ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2018 to 2020 and was collected in eleven volumes (a second part will run in the Shonen Jump+ online magazine at some point in the future). This is a series that is having an amazing year. After winning the shonen category at the 66th Shogakukan Manga Award, it was revealed that the series had over eleven million copies in circulation as of June 2021.
The story for this series takes place in an alternate 1997. The main character is a young man named Denji who has formed a contract with a devil named Pochita and works as a devil hunter in order to pay off his father’s debts to the yakuza. After being betrayed by those same yakuza and killed, Denji is revived by Pochita and granted amazing powers which leads him into working with a different group to continue hunting devils.
I’m not the biggest shonen action fan but even I have to admit that I’m curious about Chainsaw Man. While it might not be in my usual wheelhouse, it’s still one of those titles (much like Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba) that is impossible to ignore due to how overwhelmingly large it looms. Plus, when you factor in the fact that studio MAPPA is animating this title, you have an anime adaptation that looks like it’s going to be a bloody good time!
