Netflix has been slowly but surely building an impressive anime empire over the last few years. Major hits like Devilman Crybaby and Aggretsuko mark their ever-growing lineup of anime offerings, alongside impressive upcoming releases like a new Ghost in the Shell project and the latest Studio Trigger anime BNA: Brand New Animals. Their latest anime announcement is a pretty unique one, though, because it’s actually an animated spin-off of one of their exclusive live-action series. Sci-fi adventure Altered Carbon is getting the 3DCG anime treatment with a new project titled Altered Carbon: Resleeved, and it’s set to hit Netflix on March 19th.
The animated feature focuses on Takeshi Kovacs, a man living on the planet Latimer who is coerced into protecting a yakuza tattoo artist as he investigates the death of a major yakuza boss alongside a no-nonsense CTAC detective. The story is penned by Dai Sato, the writer behind hit series like Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Eureka Seven, Cowboy Bebop, and Ergo Proxy. It’s meant to “explore new elements of the story mythology.” Tsukasa Kondo is also credited as a writer on Altered Carbon: Resleeved.
The Japanese voice cast for the 3DCG anime is as follows:
- Tatsuhisa Suzuki as Ken (Takeshi Kovacs)
- Rina Satou as Gina (Leilin Kawahara)
- Ayaka Asai as Holly Togram
- George Nakata as Ogai
- Kenji Yamauchi as Hideki Tanaseda
- Kanehira Yamamoto as Shinji
- Kōji Ishii as Genzō
Altered Carbon: Resleeved is being produced by Anima, the 3DCG animation studio behind Cat Shit One: The Animated Series and Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV. The anime is being directed by Jo Nakajima and Yoshiyuki Okada. Yasuo Ohtagaki, the character designer behind Moonlight Mile and Mobile Suit Gundam: Thunderbolt, is credited as the character designer on this anime as well. Ren Kikuchi of Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV fame is the CG supervisor, while MONACA is composing music for the animation.
