Tokyo-based multinational entertainment company Konami Group Corporation announced a new animation studio, Konami Animation. Their first offering is a Yu-Gi-Oh! special celebrating a quarter century of the game.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Card Game 25th Anniversary Special Movie “Yu-Gi-Oh! Card Game The Chronicles” — yep, that’s the full English title — is a wonderful look back at the past 25 years of Yu-Gi-Oh! Buckle up! Because we’ve got over six minutes of magical reminiscing on our To-Do list.

The Genesis of Konami Animation

Unfortunately, not a whisper of a rumor has yet been heard on the internet of a full-season series or movie. Certainly, Konami Animation is starting on the right foot, no matter what they have in the pipeline. It’ll be worth keeping an eye on them, anime fans.

Konami’s announcement on Twitter/X about their new animation studio, Konami Animation.

Konami Animation’s talent is formidable right out of the gate. The company’s formation makes perfect sense when you read their mission statement:

We aim to dynamically evolve the Japanese anime scene to a new level by focusing all our experiences, knowledge, and cutting-edge technology cultivated in game development and applying it to anime production.

Mission Statement, Konami Animation

Will Konami Animation have much to prove when their first animated series debuts on July 7th? I doubt it. My money is on Reign of the Seven Spell Blades — the studio’s first season-long series — gaining a devoted following from day one. The trailer speaks for itself.

Yu-Gi-Oh! VR Concept Game Unveiled at Tokyo Dome

The 25-year celebrations included a Yu-Gi-Oh! event held at Tokyo Dome last weekend, on the 3rd and 4th of February. Of note — especially for all Dark Magician Girl fans — was an experimental VR gameplay experience of Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links. Check out the video next.

Are you looking forward to isekai-ing into a two-player game? Do you want one-on-one time with a digital stranger in the comfort of your own home? You don’t need to ask me because I’m telling you that’s just creepy. We’ll have to wait and see if this mode of play gains traction. I (personally) haven’t gotten over the cringe-inducing emotes in Pokémon TGC Live yet.

You, Me, Oh Gee!

I’m “Yu-Gi-Oh! curious.” I started playing Magic: the Gathering in high school some 26 years ago. Much later, I taught English in the land of anime and manga. Japan loves collectible card games, and our town had a store dedicated to the hobby. You couldn’t shuffle a stack of commons in the store on any given afternoon after school without bumping into a student playing Yu-Gi-Oh! I prefer a healthy savings balance, so I stuck with the game I knew and didn’t double dip. But I couldn’t run from Yugi’s game forever. Eventually, J-List legend Swaps4 introduced me to Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links on Steam, and I played my first games. Yu-Gi-Oh! was fun, but that savings balance needed constant attention and soon stole me away again.

But Yu-Gi-Oh! has made an impact over its quarter decade of life. Sales for the game continually rank within the top three trading card games on TCGplayer’s Top 25 Sealed TCG Products lists. In November last year, the game hit the number 1 ranking with its 25th Anniversary Rarity Collection Booster Box. The franchise, which began as a manga created by Kazuki Takahashi, is now a multimedia powerhouse including movies, anime, and figures of a “well-prepared” Dark Magician Girl. Takahashi unfortunately passed away in 2022, but his legacy is as strong as ever.

Do you have a favorite Yu-Gi-Oh! card? What’s the oldest Konami game you’ve played? I’m unsure if I played an official version of Frogger. But I did put serious time into playing Pooyan on the Famicom. Shooting ballooning wolves with arrows is still hilarious, and we need a triple-A sequel. ’Nuff said!

Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters Millennium Puzzle Pouch

The power of the Dark Magician Girl is strong on the J-List store! There are plenty of Yu-Gi-Oh! figures on preorder, but I think you’ll love the Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters Millennium Puzzle Pouch. It’s perfect for cosplay or for holding gaming dice and counters. Or for holding a Dark Magician Girl’s phone number. This is not a pyramid scheme. Really!
