Thanks to an announcement that first hit the internet on September 26th, we now know for certain that 2020 is going to get off to an amazing start! Thanks to a magazine scan, it’s been revealed that the highly anticipated third TV season of A Certain Scientific Railgun will air in January 2020! The anime was originally supposed to air at some point in 2019 but I suppose we can all forgive them for being fashionably late with this one.
We don’t have a ton of details as yet but here’s what we know; director Tatsuyuki Nagai and animation studio J.C. Staff will return to put this one together. We also know that the band fripside will return to perform the new opening theme song. On the other end will be Kishida Kyodan & The Akeboshi Rockets performing the ending theme. Other names returning to the franchise include Yuichi Tanaka (character designs) and Maiko Iuchi (background music composer). Not returning this time around, however, is the series composition Seishi Minakami who is being replaced in that role by Shogo Yasukawa.
Originally a manga spinoff written by Kazuma Kamachi and illustrated by Motoi Fuyukawa from the A Certain Magical Index light novel series, this series follows a few of the side characters from Index who gained a pretty devout following all on their own. It began serialization in April 2007 and is now up to its 14th volume as of October 2018. It has also inspired two television anime series and an OVA.
The manga is being released in English by Seven Seas and they describe the story as:
Welcome to a world where mysticism and science collide, and supernatural powers are derived from either science or religion. At the heart of this world is Academy City, an advanced metropolis whose population is comprised mostly of students. The majority of students are enrolled in the city’s “Power Curriculum Program,” where they must learn to master their latent psychic powers. Out of several million students, only seven are deemed powerful enough to have Level 5 status.
Meet Mikoto Misaka, the third most powerful Level 5 esper in Academy City. Together with her best friend Kuroko Shirai and the other members of Judgment, a student-run law enforcement agency, Mikoto delves deep into the dark heart of the scientific sprawl she calls home, and uncovers secrets she wishes she hadn’t!
