Shinmai Ossan Bokensha, Saikyo Party ni Shinu Hodo Kitaerarete Muteki ni Naru (The Rookie Middle-Aged Adventurer Was Trained to Death by the Most Powerful Party to Become Invincible) gives an older gentleman a chance to take on the role of an overpowered and overlooked adventurer. These anime series usually feature teenagers with godlike strength. This time, we’ll watch a 30-year-old guild clerk train to become the very best. We’ll see if he gets cute girls like his younger counterparts when the series premieres this July. Let’s enjoy the trailer until then.
Kiraku Kishima posted the original Shinmai Ossan Bokensha novel to the user-generated website Shosetsuka ni Naro. Kakuyom took up publishing on June 1st, 2018. Hobby Japan began a light novel adaptation with the artist Tea on December 22nd, 2018, with thirteen volumes currently available.
Our older adventurer and a couple of his cute friends are as follows:
- Rick Gladiator — Takuya Sato (Caesar Anthonio Zeppeli from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure). A 30-year-old man who quit his job as a guild clerk to become an adventurer. His two years of hellish training left him traumatized but powerful.
- Reanette Elfelt — Saori Onishi (Yuki Sumi in Oshi no Ko). Orichalcum Fist’s half-dark elf guild maid. Her former profession made her a legend when she attained the title of Cutting Sword Princess after attaining 9,999 consecutive victories in the underground arena.
- Alicerette Draqul — Misaki Kuno (Sugar from Urusei Yatsura (2022)). A pure-blooded vampire with extraordinary destructive abilities. Rick has seen her power first-hand and rarely ever walked away from the experience.

Shinmai Ossan Bokensha Proves It’s Never Too Late to Go on an Adventure
Shinmai Ossan Bokensha is another sword and sorcery anime series with a powerfully exceptional protagonist. Unlike similar entries in the genre, this protagonist isn’t a teenager. Rick Gladiator (epic name) was a guild receptionist for fourteen years. He suddenly quit two years ago and trained with the strongest adventurers’ guild in the land: Orichalcum’s Fist. They worked him to the brink of death and brought him back every time. This led to an explosive growth of power.
Rick is a bit older than the other rookie adventurers. Usually, people join the profession before they reach twenty. Though Rick has a late start, his power easily surpasses his rank and reaches the highest tier S-rank.
