Eve wants to play golf with Aoi, but Aoi’s schedule doesn’t allow it. Eve plays a rival school’s ace at a mini-golf course, stirring her competitive juices.
Episode 10 – “Evangeline is Frightfully Upset”
Hmm.
When the setting in BIRDIE WING shifted from Nafrece to Japan, it left behind shady, manipulative match-fixers and fun Gundam references. Or so I thought! BIRDIE WING decided to combine the replacement for Rose Aleon’s character with Lily’s Gundam commercials for Bandai Namco products. Coach Reiya Amuro devised multiple layers of plots to place Eve on the golf club team.
First, he needed to test Eve’s golfing abilities. Second, he wanted Eve to stop fixating on Aoi. When Raiou competes in the doubles championship, Eve and Aoi will be partners. BIRDIE WING aims to make the golf tournament the setting for the season finale. If Eve only wants to play against Aoi, she will not be motivated to play against other high school girls. Coach Reiya needs to manage his player’s energy and focus. And third, he wants to gain an advantage on a rival team outside the golf course. Legally, of course. Coach Reiya Amuro put all three goals into play when Kuyou offered to putt better than Eve at Adventure Golf. That matched Rose’s skill in amping up Eve’s motivation to play her in sudden death match play.
So, Coach Reiya replaced Rose as the devious match-fixer for girls’ golf tournaments. But how does he replace Lily’s Gunpla commercials? Just walking and talking is good enough for BIRDIE WING and Bandai Namco. Because not only does Reiya Amuro call back to Amuro Ray from the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise, he shares the same voice actor! Tooru Furuya reprises his role in the just-released Mobile Suit Gundam movie. And he plays the self-referential Tooru Amuro (Rei Furuya) character in the spinoff Detective Conan series and movie out on Netflix and theaters in 2022. I’d have preferred more robots for Gundam references, but the original Amuro Ray playing Coach Reiya Amuro is fun too.
Heh.
Confirmed. Eve sleeps in the nude! And she’s already freeloading rent from Ichina’s dorm room. Eve didn’t like the high school girls staring at them, but she gave them a panty show anyway. BIRDIE WING continues to play fast and loose with rules in golf tournaments and schools. Coach Reiya wants that new blonde bombshell golfer! Ooh. Aoi’s Pacman logo is on the golf ball in the opening credits. Will Eve finally have a lovey-dovey golfing reunion?
Aoi flat-out ignores Eve’s demand for playing golf. Eve still has trouble with the “my pace” girl. Har. Eve thinks Japan is only about shrimp tempura, Mt. Fuji, geisha girls, and Ace Attorney pointing. Aoi’s on a schedule and can’t play with her friend. How about joining the golf club? Yeah! The coach wants her, so this should be easy. Ichina plays the stalker role. She calls Eve a “mad dog!” Hahaha! BIRDIE WING pushes Aoi’s yuri tendencies in our face. She wants to be with Eve “forever.” Also, their opposite golf styles will improve each other’s game.
Eve went straight to the golf club to join. Coach Reiya thinks he’s better than Eve. Yeah? Prove it! Ah. The coach has a plan to replace the injured Kinue with Eve. Reiya appears as calculating as Rose in past BIRDIE WING episodes. He wants to provoke Eve’s motivation to play others besides Aoi. What did he do?
Ichina explains that Eve can live in the dorms once she joins the golf club. Eve has other ideas. Shacking up with other girls. She’ll pierce their hearts straight through! Ichina calls Eve a lady-killer and a mad dog. That’s a deadly combination for an all-girls school! After-school date montage with a 90’s vibe music soundtrack. Bandai Namco needs to sell music through BIRDIE WING. Aw. Over too soon. It’s just Eve and her stalker now. Er, future caddy.
Enter the next challenger! Kuyou is confident in her putting. She shares the voice of Kuroko Shirai (Satomi Arai) from the A Certain Magical Index series, so I want to hear an “onee-sama” from her. Yeah, why? Ichina asks why Eve picks fights with everyone? Oho! Miniature golf duel! Kuyou is good at reading a putting green’s line and sticking to it. Mini golf is no match for Eve’s Green Bullet! Ichina can’t believe it. BIRDIE WING is still a ruthless mafia golf anime! Don’t be fooled by high school girls in a slice-of-life mall date setting. Eve pierced Kuyou’s heart. She can’t “Search the Line” anymore. Ooh. Her doubles partner saved her.
Eve likes Kaoruko’s energy. Kaoruko saw that Kuyou’s confidence was already gone. She’s a boss lady! Wow. Kaoruko decided to use a pitching wedge instead of a putter. She’s like a mafia golfer who aims at a player’s weakness as she aims at the pin. This will excite Eve more. Which is scarier in BIRDIE WING? The mob in Nafrece or the old money behind rich girls’ academies? Kaoruko’s superpower is concentration, “In the Zone.” She chipped it in! She also left a big dimple right in front of the cup.
Wait! Ichina sees a trap! Good. Ichina noticed that dent too. But how does straight shooter Eve get past it? Oho. Ichina has a superpower too! Aha. Aim for the grass defect! Have we seen Eve hit a ball at less than full power? Eve’s a gambler, so she’ll roll the dice on the shot and on Ichina. Yatta! Ichina proved her caddy skills. And Kaoruko made herself one of Eve’s targets. A successful night at the mall. But before calling it a night, burger time!
Whoa. Kaoruko was a double agent for Coach Reiya. He’s the new Rose Aleon for BIRDIE WING. He tested Eve’s skill while hopefully crushing an opponent’s spirit. It’s suspicious that these other high school girls would grant his requests. Eve is on the golf club team now.
Next time, harsh training episode with a demon coach!
