VTubers have truly taken over the world. Cute anime girls (and boys) draw in thousands of viewers every time they go live. Hololive’s Gawr Gura performed at a Dodgers game, and the Dodgers came from behind to win. The love for VTubers is real, and that’s why VTuber Legend: How I Went Viral After Forgetting to Turn Off My Stream was made. People love VTubers, and I predict we’ll get far more VTuber-related anime series. Besides Kizuna no Allele and Magical Girl holoWitches!
Let’s focus on this anime for now. VTuber Legend meets almost every expectation a VTuber fan could have for a series about VTubers.
Why do I think VTuber Legend is the start of a new trend in anime? Let’s talk.
The Daily Life of a VTuber Legend
VTuber Legend‘s magic comes from how realistic it seems. The VTubers are actual in-universe VTubers. They’re people sitting behind a computer talking to a camera. The setup itself looks like something a real VTuber would have. The VTuber talents look like their avatars, even offline, which might put you off. It’s like they’re always wearing their costumes. Some VTuber fans don’t want the illusion ruined by seeing their favorite VTubers’s offline fashion choices. It’s weird to see a dragon succubus, a miko, and a princess walk down the street after singing karaoke. Then there are the other characters, who seem to be cardboard cutouts. However, the theme song alone cements the fact that this anime presents a somewhat realistic take on the daily antics of a VTuber.
We see a computer boot up, an announcement posted, and a digital idol speak to chat. Then there’s scuff. It’s the VTuber experience all right.
Awayuki Kokorone started her VTuber career three months ago and her growth has since stagnated. Her pure and wholesome seiso persona has worked for some people, but she hasn’t been getting the same numbers her fellow genmates received. Her most recent stream ended without a hitch, but didn’t end when she thought it ended. Rather, scuff happened and her stream kept going. Her viewers heard her unhinged adoration of her fellow VTubers and her unbridled joy of beer.
This is a typical VTuber experience, too. Hololive’s Akai Haato and Phase-Connect’s Kaminari Clara started their careers as seiso wholesome VTubers and they found some success. Then they let their masks slip and showed their fans how unhinged they could be. Their fans loved them even more.
Let’s Collab with a VTuber Legend
The fans pour in after Awayuki shows off how much fun she can be with a couple beers in her. Her manager is fine with her cracking a cold one open during a livestream. Viewers heap praise upon her at a rapid pace. This perfectly mirrors a normal chat. Anyone who has stood in the trenches shoulder to shoulder with other fans can recognize the rabid lore and adoration.
Two of Awayuki’s seniors at Live-On appear in chat and express their appreciation for her style: Sei and Shion. VTubers like watching other VTubers. Some will sit in on livestreams while others will watch VODs or clips. Awayuki immediately continues her lewdtuber escapades by proposing to both girls so she can get busy with them. Yes, Awayuki is not shy about flirting with other girls or expressing an interest in getting steamy with women. This is fairly common among VTubers. Girls will flirt with one another, and even get “married” and adopt other VTubers as their children. Then you have girls like Shion who are everyone’s mom.
Awayuki is especially close with Mashiro, whom she refers to as “mom.” Mashiro designed Awayuki’s avatar, and they have been friends ever since. The collabs show how fast and loose the animation plays with perspectives. There are times when the VTubers are shown in their Live2D forms on screen, we’ll see them sitting behind a computer, or we’ll see them in the same room.
Mashiro and Awayuki held a Q&A collab where we got some of Awayuki’s backstory. Awayuki sat in on one of Hikari’s livestreams and watched her play a silly game about dueling sausages with a special appearance by a banana. VTubers playing patently ridiculous games on stream is a part of the VTuber experience. There was also an ASMR stream, and fans of that sort of stuff will be delighted to hear that it’s played like a real ASMR stream. Wear headphones for the best experience.
Lively VTubers
VTubers are known for being flashy anime girls (and boys), and the idols of VTuber Legend are no different. Awayuki is a regal princess with a snow theme, Sei is a dragon succubus with very revealing clothing, and Shion is a miko with fox tails and blue flames. These are typical VTuber models you’ll find elsewhere in the digital space. Their personalities also seem to match their models, just like real-life VTubers.
It’s abundantly clear that the creatives behind VTuber Legend did their research. This isn’t a show about the VTubers acting like their models and going on adventures. It’s a slice-of-life series about VTubers having fun at work. Being a VTuber is an actual job, and they all have concerns about maintaining their professions. Their larger-than-life personalities make for an entertaining experience, but they must come off as genuine. Awayuki’s backstory was touching to see. She was once one of the cardboard cutouts working at a black company until she tried her luck at a Live-On audition to join the third gen. The idols who inspired her to raise her head became her co-workers.
I highly recommend VTuber Legend if you want a fun slice-of-life series. This is also a great introduction to VTubers, so anyone interested in learning more about VTubers and the community might get something out of this series. Experience the excitement of seeing a new outfit reveal. If you need more convincing, cute girls in cute outfits flirt. There is potential yuri to be enjoyed.
