Alto vows to protect Vermeil against the world and Iolite. The student council joins Alto’s cause in the season finale.
Episode 12 – “Together”
Hmm.
Vermeil in Gold made it clear what its vermeil name means. Vermeil’s golden mana combined with Alto’s silver. That is the definition of vermillion. The anime has done well to highlight the colors of demonic mana, golden color, and Alto’s silver color in terms of their compatibility. But it makes me curious about what other colors might mean. In the practical portion of the Bronze Exams, we saw the mana color of the students who successfully directed magic through the crystal ball. Colonel Phalanx remarked that Alto’s mana color meant something, but we never heard the significance. If Vermeil in Gold gets more seasons, I hope it explains.
Heh.
Recap the tragedy in the last episode of Vermeil in Gold. Oh, this is a better kissing scene. Not just breaking chains, but a whole lock. The veiled Mage of the Beginning is on that thing. Artistic. Crack! And back to Iolite’s reality. He’s not used to surprises. Oh, that’s disappointing. Iolite just put armor on his knight golem. Not much imagination on that one. Iolite claims demonic powers of destruction shouldn’t exist. But he’s like the Joker from The Dark Knight. Instead of a positive solution to demons, either sealing them or harnessing them, he goes in another direction. Blow up the world! Does Iolite’s Platinum Square colleague, the one growing Cthulhu in a vat, know about this?
Enough yapping. It’s time for Vermeil in Gold to finish their fight. Vermeil’s golden mana combines with Alto’s silver aura. Hey, that’s what “vermeil” means! Can Alto’s crystal pillar stop Iolite’s attack? Of course! Aw, poor Iolite. He doesn’t have time for round two. Heliodor’s protected dimensions won’t survive for long. Time to go! Haha! The pale mage scared Alto! Her name is Fatima. Thank goodness Vermeil said her name. She resembles a holy woman blessing her marriage to Alto. Ooh, Fatima is beautiful! She has golden eyes and a scar. Fatima comes by her title honestly because she turned back time! Not only that, this version of Fatima is a mere fragment of a memory. The people’s injuries healed too.
Epilogue time already? Or just season finale scenes begging for a Vermeil in Gold second season? Good for Alto! He’s putting in the work to become stronger. He can’t be a pure mage to protect Vermeil. He needs melee skills too. Jessica is a harsh sword trainer, but she cares. Oh, yes! Chris is in sporty booty shorts! It took a while for her to complete her redemption arc. Kick Alto harder, gym mommy! Fire finger in the mouth… sexy! Alto promised to become strong enough to defend Vermeil. But that means potentially taking on the entire world. Uh, that also means becoming stronger than Vermeil! Life goals, everybody. Ooh, Jessica is such a pure maiden. Alto’s declaration made her blush! I want to see these goofballs in a second season!
I just want to say that I would love to have a dorm room as Alto had. Vermeil in Gold gave us what we wanted before the end of the season. Naked kissing! Har. Whose fault is it that Vermeil needs to pull up her entire dress to show her chest? It’s the virgin-killer dress’s fault! Oh, good. Vermeil and Alto have the necessary conversation about her past. It’s love.
So, the student council wants to take on the military and the rogue Platinum Squares to protect their students. Elena figures the military will eventually come for a demon. That might not be just Vermeil! I’m looking at Elena’s suspicious sword with an eye. The other council members’ reasons for agreeing are pure characterization in Vermeil in Gold. Ryuuga expresses noblesse oblige to watch over the lessers. Jessica will do whatever Elena says. Alan cares about familiars. Chris wants revenge on whoever messes with her toys, like Rex. The redemption arc is still iffy on her. We need a second season, yo!
Okay, Vermeil in Gold is in the genuine epilogue mode. Alto’s crew passed the Bronze Exams. They needed to reschedule the standardized portion, but it all worked out. The anime took the joke all the way to the end! Marx’s lucky pencil gave him a perfect score! Do we need a second look at Marx’s magic powers? Is he like a bard class? Of course! Vermeil and Alto need hidden public sexy time.
The end! And happily ever after!
Vermeil in Gold, Final Thoughts.
Refreshing! Unapologetic sexiness! Vermeil in Gold is a rare anime in 2022 that uses fanservice as a feature of character development, plot development, and attention development. Anime studios know they can’t make the next To Love-Ru or Kiss x Sis on today’s distribution platforms. Vermeil in Gold streamed on Hidive, the tremendous service that gave us three levels of censorship on Mother of Goddess’ Dormitory. Unfortunately, the anime gave us creative censorship to manage a naked thicc demoness on screen for Blu-ray bait. So the ultimate pay-off for excited fans will come later. Still, watching an oppai-oneesan crush a shota between thighs, boobs, and lips was energetic entertainment.
Vermeil in Gold wasn’t a perfect adaptation of its manga source because it chose the Platinum Square terrorists attacking the Bronze Exams as its concluding arc. The producers sacrificed much narrative development to arrive at Vermeil’s origin story before the end of the first cour. That decision speaks to a production committee that wasn’t confident in getting more than twelve episodes to arrive at a satisfying conclusion. When Alto and Vermeil returned from Fatima’s memory world, the anime season needed to end Iolite’s fight quickly. I could see more time spent with Iolite and with Fatima to explain things. But if there’s no guarantee that Vermeil in Gold has more anime episodes to tell its story, it has to wrap things up in a hopeful bow.
If you like sexy, fantasy settings that are not based on video game mechanics (also rare in 2022), then Vermeil in Gold is refreshing in another way. It’s been a long time since I saw mages only had one elemental nature. Alto was the crystal mage, Chris was the fire mage, and Rex was the earth mage. That simple construction allows thematic character development. Chris is a fiery-tempered woman, lending to her anger issues as a plot device. Alto’s crystal manufacturing points to his studious nature and his unbending core. The colors of mana mean things too, but we didn’t hear enough about them during this season. The golden and silver for vermilion mattered for Alto and Vermeil. I would love to see how mana’s colors impact character development in a future season.
