One example of this phenomenon is the recent surge in “Goth Frieren” cosplay.

Beyond the Journey for Goth Frieren Cosplay
The idea for a goth girlfriend version of Frieren from Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End has been bouncing around on the internet for a while. Fan artists like Alicks first drew a goth-inspired Frieren in 2024, while the anime was still airing. The design really gathered steam in the middle of 2025, thanks to fan art from talented artists like SetsuManga2, as well as numerous NSFW pieces.
From there, it was only a matter of time until some of the best cosplayers from around the world combined Frieren and classic “goth girlfriend” cosplay together. The result? The most “mommy” version ever of everyone’s favorite elf mage!

The Appeal of the Goth Frieren Cosplay
What exactly makes a goth girlfriend so attractive? Maybe it’s that deep well of mother issues our therapist wants to talk about, or it’s the shameful desire for a 6-inch platform boot to step on you. Frieren’s goth version plays into her overall maturity as a character, while also humanizing her with a specific subculture.
Japan has a specific subgenre of “girls” that roughly aligns with the Western concept of emo/alt girls — the jirai-kei joshi, or “Landmine Girl.” They’re known for their flamboyant outfits and emotional damage (“mood,” we say in unison). Not every goth cosplay needs to be all about pounding cans of Monster Energy Ultra and blasting the greatest hits of 2008’s emo scene. After all, goth girls deserve to be comfy and have cozy moments like anyone else!
There’s something about black-and-gray striped knitwear that undeniably screams “cuddling on the couch reading manga.” Given Frieren’s penchant for being deceived by mimic chests, maybe she’d love gacha games instead, though!
