Make Your Sailor Moon Wedding Dream Come True
As I wrote in yesterday’s J-List site update, cash is still a big deal in Japan, for various reasons. Among other things, you need cash when you go to certain important ceremonies, such as weddings or funerals, to give to the happy couple or to the bereaved.
In the case of weddings, you bring your cash gift in a beautifully decorated envelope, called a 祝儀袋 shuugi-bukuro, because of course showing the actual money would be in poor taste. When Bandai brought out these cool Sailor Moon wedding gift envelopes, we thought, this is a great idea, but too culturally unique to Japan for our customers around the world to really understand, and we assumed they wouldn’t be very popular. Leave it to J-List customers to surprise us: the Sailor Moon wedding gift envelopes immediately became one of the top sellers on our site. Shows what we know!
There are two different types of envelopes: full-sized Sailor Moon wedding gift envelopes, plus smaller gift envelopes, which in Japan are used for 年玉 toshi-dama, cash gifts you give to children on New Year’s Day, which I like a lot, because it makes children very eager to spend time with family, as they’re going to get cash for it. Both of these will only be up for preorder for a short time, so grab them if you want them on our Sailor Moon page!
