Pan Piano is a very popular musician. She’s an incredibly talented pianist with a figure that models would kill to have. Music and cosplay have become a match made in heaven when Pan Piano regularly releases videos of her playing piano renditions of beloved anime music while wearing cosplay outfits of characters from those series.
We here at J-List were quite fortunate that Pan Piano agreed to field an interview with us. We discussed everything from her background in music to her favorite characters and cosplays.
Pan Piano’s Musical Background
Kasaix: I’d like to thank you for taking the time to speak with us. We here at J-List count ourselves among your legions of fans. So, we’re all very curious, what made you start playing the piano in cosplay?
Pan Piano: It started as just an experiment. Later on, realizing the enthusiastic response from the audience, I began to cosplay as much as possible in every piano cover.
Kasaix: How did you get into playing the piano? When did you start playing the piano?
Pan Piano: I’ve been playing the piano since the age of 6, and during my university years, I pursued a major in music with a focus on the piano.
Kasaix: How long have you had your piano?
Pan Piano: Originally, I practiced on an upright piano and filmed videos in a friend’s piano room. Later, in 2019, I acquired a new studio where I’ve been using the same grand piano for practice and filming, for about five years now.
Kasaix: Did you buy it, or was it a gift?
Pan Piano: This was specially bought for me by my mother, and I cherish it greatly.
Pan Piano’s Cosplay — Her Favorite Characters
Kasaix: How long have you been cosplaying?
Pan Piano: My interest in cosplay developed after I started uploading piano covers on YouTube. I’d like to share with you the first video where I tried cosplaying (Sailor suit cosplay).
Kasaix: It’s a great video. Were you excited or nervous to start cosplaying on YouTube?
Pan Piano: During my student days, performing live used to make me quite nervous. However, when recording videos, I don’t feel as nervous because if I make a mistake, I can always redo it, which is quite convenient. Creating new piano videos always excites me.
Kasaix: How did you come up with the idea of doing cosplay in your videos?
Pan Piano: I find anime characters to be very unique and attractive, so I enjoy dressing up as characters from various works.
Kasaix: Which one of your videos is your favorite?
Pan Piano: Many videos are beloved and filled with memories. Among them, my favorite is the “紅蓮華 (Gurenge)” cover from Demon Slayer.
Kasaix: Which character did you most enjoy cosplaying the most?
Pan Piano: Rather than specific characters, it’s more about the Survey Corps uniform from Attack on Titan. Because I love Attack on Titan, and this cosplay outfit is quite challenging to wear, it has left me with memorable experiences during cosplay.
Kasaix: Who do you plan to cosplay as next?
Pan Piano: I recently played the role of Übel from Sousou no Frieren, and the audience response was pretty good.
Next, I plan to cosplay characters from the Gundam series.
Kasaix: Who are some of your favorite characters?
Pan Piano: Rei Ayanami (From Evangelion).
Pan Piano’s Artistic Process — From Plans to Video
Kasaix: What was your process when making that video? How do you choose a song to play on the piano, and how do you pick what costume to wear?
Pan Piano: I usually watch a lot of anime or play games. If there’s a series I like or a popular one, I’ll look for cosplay costumes of characters from that series, as well as sheet music. Afterwards, I practice and film. I also often draw inspiration from fan works on the internet.
