Episode 6 – Tatami and Tights
Hmm.
This week, Miru Tights looks at how the latest generation of young folks deal with traditional cultural events. Attitudes change, cultures change, and even furniture changes as the years go by. It’s especially interesting in modern Japan, where many of its traditions and etiquette rules centered around sitting on the floor next to low tables. The tatami mat is an important part of all this because bare floors are hard and get dirty easily. The straw mats are easy to move around, dust, clean, and replace.
In recent years, however, Japan has been integrating a lot of Western-style furniture. Students sit in chairs and desks all day at school or in the library, sit in booths and benches at restaurants and karaoke, and may even sit in a chair with a desk at home to study. It’s no wonder that Yuiko-sensei chose for her punishment of the gabby girls to sit in the traditional way on tatami mats as they performed the Way of Tea.
The impressive Yuiko-sensei makes a show of how kneeling with her feet tucked in for an hour was no big deal for a refined modern lady in a short skirt and tights. Artist Yom’s tweet implies she might have more trouble than we saw, but the girls didn’t see this in the show and neither did the audience, so I believe Yuiko-sensei is still our pantyhose wearing Nadeshiko. I am still waiting for an episode dedicated to the formidable Ms. Yuiko.

Aw. Detention. Made to sit quietly without talking, which is exactly the opposite of how they got in trouble.
Yuiko-sensei has no trouble sitting for long periods in the traditional way.
The girls are already starting to fidget with their feet.
Homi makes the tea and doesn’t seem to have a problem with her sitting posture.
Homi and Ren have trouble remembering the order of the tea ceremony, Yua knows it pretty well.
Ren is getting impatient.
Yuiko-sensei is serene. Also, it’s very important to show the tatami pattern in her glasses.
Is Yuiko-sensei the adviser to the Tea Ceremony Club, or is she just a Nadeshiko in a short skirt and tights?
Is Ren cramping, tingling from legs falling asleep, both?
Yua sees an opportunity. Yua takes it! Yua is relentless!
Shouldn’t Yuiko-sensei see Yua’s leg stretched out like that?
The bell rings, which means detention is over. Yuiko-sensei had no trouble standing up. Sitting like that quietly is apparently not a punishment.
Ren wants payback!
