When you think about it, being a magical girl can be an inconvenience. Maybe it’s my cynicism or lack of social responsibility talking, but I wouldn’t want to gain magical powers. And the only thing I’d willingly fight is censorship. Hell, magical powers by themselves sound like a headache. Anything that makes more people take an interest in me is something to be detested, especially if doing it puts me in clothes that draw people’s attention. That’s a sentiment that Yuzuka Hanami from Mahou Shoujo Nante Mouiidesukara would strongly agree with.
A three-minute, short-form anime about magical girls (debatable), I’ve Had Enough of Being a Magical Girl is the quintessential “quick watch.” But with a total runtime of 72 minutes for two seasons, is it worth the hour you’d give up to watch it? Yes, it is, let me tell you why! But first, a synopsis.
Mahou Shoujo Nante Mouiidesukara Synopsis
It’s 2016; you had a pleasant day at school, and as you walk home, the setting sun paints a fiery glow across the sky. You think that today was an enjoyable day, and with that thought, your peace of mind immediately goes away. From a pile of garbage, a malnourished creature jumps at you, traps you in a magical barrier, and then turns you into a magical girl! And not just any magical girl, a magical girl in a skimpy outfit! That is the story of Yuzuka Hanami.
Even though the need for magical girls is now nonexistent, Yuzuka becomes one. But with little to do and a skimpy outfit she hates, how does she maneuver her newfound life as a magical girl?

People often overlook short-form anime or treat it as throwaway entertainment. Therefore, recommending short-form anime is always a challenge. The challenge that comes with recommending Mahou Shoujo Nante Mouiidesukara only increases because it’s a pervy watch.
When you consider that anime like Gushing Over Magical Girls and Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya gleefully embrace their sexuality, a short-form anime like Mahou Shoujo Nante Mouiidesukara seems outclassed. This is a four-minute show that embraces moe and stays firmly within fan-service territory. Yet, I would argue that it’s precisely these elements that make I’ve Had Enough of Being a Magical Girl stand out. It’s not trying to be a horny gripping watch like Maho Ako. Instead, it aims to be a fluffy, short experience.
Most working anime fans often complain about not having enough free time to watch as many shows as they did in their teenage years. That’s where Mahou Shoujo Nante Mouiidesukara comes in! If your week is so busy that you only have an hour or two free, you can binge both seasons in one go.
I’ve Had Enough of Being a Magical Girl is like a quattro pizza — it offers a little bit of everything and is bound to make people happy. The art style is soft and warm, swinging from comedy to touching moments or playful perviness. The anime fits snugly into the comedy and slice-of-life genres, making it a relaxing watch when you need to unwind. The plot isn’t anything groundbreaking, but honestly, I don’t see that as a bad thing. There have been days when things get so stressful I can’t even figure out what 2 + 2 is. On days like that, where finding comfort is almost impossible, anime like Mahou Shoujo Nante Mouiidesukara bring me joy.
Why You Should Avoid It
As much as I found Yuzuka to be a lovable character, some people might be upset that she’s the main focus of the show. Mahou Shoujo Nante Mouiidesukara is a short series, so frequently putting its lead character in skimpy outfits and situations will offend some viewers. But given where you’re reading this review, I doubt that will be an issue.
If you can’t stand shows without a tangible plot, Mahou Shoujo Nante Mouiidesukara is a definite skip. Plenty of short-form anime have a decent plot (Yama no Susume, Mangirl!), but this anime doesn’t think that’s necessary. Likewise, if you’re expecting something like Maho Ako that actually deals with magical girl behavior, there’s none of that here.

Why do you recommend shows? Do you base your recommendations on art and plot? I’d say for most people, that’s not the main reason. Most of us recommend something because we found it entertaining or enjoyable.
I’ve Had Enough of Being a Magical Girl won’t win any awards, but it doesn’t need to. If a show can put a smile on my face during a rough day, that’s more valuable to me than a perfectly polished masterpiece. More importantly, it’s something I’ll happily recommend. While I think this anime has enough fun to entertain a lot of J-List viewers, I also know it’s going to be a flop with many others. Keep that in mind.
The three-volume manga Mahou Shoujo Nante Mouiidesukara was written and illustrated by Sui Futami. It was published on Earth Star Entertainment’s Comic Earth☆Star website between March 31, 2015, and June 27, 2018. Since it’s a short series, the manga consists of 45 chapters compiled into three volumes.
Studio Pine Jam animated the two short seasons of Mahou Shoujo Nante Mouiidesukara. The first season premiered in Winter 2016, and the second followed in the fall of that year. Crunchyroll streams the censored version of the anime. God luck and good speed if you’re trying to find the uncensored version —you might end up on a list.
