What would you get if the Ghostbusters cartoon, the Tokyo Mew Mew anime, and the Office sitcom occupied the same screen in a fabulous multiverse accident? A new fall anime has the most plausible answer yet. Magilumiere Magical Girls Inc. (株式会社マジルミエ, Kabushikigaisha Magilumiere) follows a young woman entering the workforce and accidentally landing a job at a magical girl agency. Can a girl who’s only good at school thrive in an action-packed environment? Read below for reasons to watch as this comedy answers this pressing question!
The Instruction Manual Matters for Magilumiere Magical Girls Inc.
- What is Magilumiere Magical Girls Inc.? The anime adaptation of the currently releasing manga is a comedy set in a world of technology-based magic. Magic monsters randomly appear, and independent agencies of magical girls dispose of them. The story follows a ragtag startup company of magical girl otakus, a gyaru, and a new hire who’s only good at reading books and remembering things. J.C. Staff handles the animation production, and studio Moe oversees the 3DCG elements.
- Who’s in it?
- Kana Sakuragi — Fairouz Ai (Kikoru Shinomiya from Kaiju No.8). The recent college grad bombed all her job interviews until she helped a magical girl capture a “Kaii,” a magical monster. She worries how her only skills of studying and remembering information could translate to magical girl duties. Then she read the instruction manuals!
- Hitomi Koshigaya — Yumiri Hanamori (Hoshino Takanashi from Blue Archive the Animation). The gyaru was Magilumiere’s first magical girl employee. Hitomi’s intuitive style clashes with Kana’s methodical nature. She likes drinking on her time off.
- Kouji Shigemoto — Rikiya Koyama (Kiritsugu Emiya from Fate Series). The president (and founder) of Magilumiere becomes emotional whenever he sees a magical girl transformation. He always cross-dresses as a magical girl in the office.
- Kazuo Nikoyama — Daiki Yamashita (Izuku Midoriya from My Hero Academia). The magic technology engineer enjoys his job most when he designs a magical girl costume and transformation sequence. His love for magical girls rivals President Shigemoto’s.
- Where can I watch it? Magilumiere Magical Girls Inc. streams on Prime Video in Japanese audio and multiple language subtitles.
RTFM and Follow the Magilumiere Instructions!
Much of the comedy and character development will come from Kana as she navigates odd people who are inordinately (in her experience) fans of magical girls and can’t explain things with words. The corporate helpdesk command to RTFM (Read The F***ing Manual) heavily factors in Kana’s rookie year as a magical girl. Smart kids who achieved high scores on standardized tests and had good grades through school could have the same anxiety as Kana: how does reading textbooks and remembering stuff for exams help you in a white-collar job? Apparently, the qualifications for an executive aide match the equipment and software experience requirements for the gear in magical girl agencies!
Kana’s character (from a narrative device perspective) will help Magilumiere introduce its world and how it works. She comes from the safe environments of high school and university, which makes it easy for anime fans to relate to their experiences. Everything will be new, shiny, and scary! Especially when Kana will face mysterious monsters with lots of eyes. Heebie-jeebies! The audience will learn about this Ghostbusters-type environment through Kana’s inexperienced eyes. But the number one lesson of this stressful environment: Read the F***ing Manual!
Magilumiere’s world of independent magical girl agencies looks like fun. Why else should fans of “culture” watch it?
Magical Girls Fans Unite at Magilumiere Inc.
As a meta comedy for the magical girl genre, Magilumiere will make references to the fandom and make light of the formulas and conventions. Nikoyama, the magical girl engineer, dresses in the late ’90s Akihabara uniform for otaku shopping for “goods.” His laptop has all the stickers for witches and magical girls. And what tops him over his edging sessions is the magical girl transformation sequence!
Nikoyama’s boss, President Shigemoto, joins his technology officer in equal ardor but different expressions for magical girls. The Magilumiere founder is all about the uniform! He even cosplays as a magical girl for his office attire. The sight of magical girls in action and emotional catharsis (those “scenes” magical girls have with each other) drives him to brimming tears. Magilumiere will show what inspired Shigemoto to start his own magical girl office. But he’s a public health and safety ministry veteran, so I expect a dramatic reaction to ossified bureaucracy.
Magilumiere Casts a Spell on Feet and Twin Tail Fans
Nikoyama is into magical girls for the special effects in their transformation sequences. But he could instantly take Kana’s measurements by staring at her. Hentai! All that data was necessary for the obligatory magical girl transformation scene. Kana’s first time came with a cheering section! No. Magilumiere is not as “cultured” as the ecchi shows from the summer. But the sparkly body coverings on Hitomi and Kana leave little to the imagination. Nikoyama specced out their bodily proportions to the millimeter. This anime caters to feet fans with a targeted indulgence, too. Thigh fans also receive gifts from every magical girl flying their brooms.
Also, Kana’s transformation features hair ties exclusively for her twin tails! Magical girls with twin tails usually have reddish hair, and Magilumiere continues that tradition.
Prime Video Sweeps Anime Fans Away
Amazon’s Prime Video has several smash-hit shows drawing eyeballs, but their viewers hardly intersect with the anime genre. Magilumiere releases weekly there, so it won’t suffer from Netflix jail. However, the magical girl ghostbuster show will probably fade into obscurity.
Have you watched the first couple of Magilumiere Magical Girls Inc. episodes yet? I appreciate the low-stakes emotional investment in the magic monster premise. They’re treated as natural disasters so far. So far. Are Hitomi’s boots and thighs enough to pique your interest, or do you crave more mystery? Let us know in the comments below!
