Japan has always been creative when it comes to advertising—from everyday products to advocacies. Recently, the Japanese government has got its citizens to donate their blood through the use of anime idols! Meet the KKT21 or the Kenketsu (“Blood Donation”) 21st Century.
This five-and-a-half-minute video released recently was produced by Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare. The production of this anime short was in response to the decline of blood donations from people in their teens to those in their 20s. Indeed, it is very clever.
The story of this idol anime begins with Sara, an aspiring idol singer who dashes into the meeting room late to meet the other four members of her newly formed unit. She explains to her fellow members that the reason that she was late was that she helped a woman she met on the street with the directions to where she can donate blood.
Thanks to this experience, the manager of the new idol group finally catches on to a name of their idol unit, and KKT21 is born!
They’re quite different from other idol groups, as they talk more about donating blood than performing on stage and creating music. They tell you that modern science has not created a way to synthesize human blood, which is why they need more volunteers (like ordinary citizens like you) to help make a difference by donating blood to participating donation facilities and help save lives.
Well, like any idol group they have a single too, titled “A-B-O-AB! -Ima no Kimi ni Dekiru Koto-” (or “A-B-O-AB! -The Thing You Can Do Right Now-“).
Although quite short, it’s nice to know that the Japanese government has thought of something like this to reach out to the youth. It’s time to yakkai and help save lives!
