Cultured otaku who appreciate the allure of cute anime girls in leg attire will enjoy “Nice Knee-High Day.” Japanese otaku gather to appreciate girls wearing knee-high socks on November 28th. These differ — but are no less cultured — from stockings. And this lets them enjoy the coveted “zettai ryouiki” or “absolute territory,” the space between a knee-high sock and a skirt. This is High-Level Culture, and we’re here to help you understand it.
1. Mio Naruse (The Testament of Sister New Devil)
The Testament of Sister New Devil has perfect anime girls. There are thicc anime nurses and tanned fighters galore. Mio wears her school uniform, and her cultured school demands knee-high socks as part of their uniform quite often. Being the good girl with a lewd body — she wears and displays godly zettai ryouiki for a lucky harem protagonist. But don’t let her appearance fool you because she commands a well of demonic power that could sunder entire armies.
Tetsuto Uesu and Nekosuke Okuma released the original The Testament of Sister New Devil light novel series between September 29th, 2012, and March 31st, 2021. Kadokawa Shoten published all thirteen volumes in the Kadokawa Sneaker Bunko imprint. Production IMS’s anime adaptation premiered on January 7th, 2015.
2. Akeno Himejima (High School DxD)
High School DxD is another cultured anime series with cute redheads, maids, teachers, harem girls, and dragons. Akeno doesn’t often wear knee-high socks, but when she does, she looks great. Her typical school uniform’s socks barely reach her knee, and she knows that great socks must pass the knee to be effective. She knows the value of knee-high socks that show off tantalizing zettai ryouiki. Akeno is one of the many girls vying for a harem protagonist, so she uses what she has to gain an advantage. Akeno comes from a divine bloodline that makes her a force on the battlefield.
Ichiei Ishibumi and Miyama-Zero released the original High School DxD light novel series between September 20th, 2008, and March 20th, 2018. Fujimi Shobo published all 25 volumes in Dragon Magazine. TNK’s anime adaptation premiered on January 6th, 2012.
3. Rin Tohsaka (Fate/stay night)
Rin is a tsundere girl whose typical attire includes knee-high socks that show off great zettai ryouiki. She’s equally comfortable dressing like a sexy Santa or in bikinis. Rin knows the true magic of tight socks. She’s a great magic user, so she should know such things. It must be why Shiro sticks with her, not just because she’s the key to his survival during the Holy Grail War.
Type-Moon, led by Kinoko Nasu, released the first Fate/stay night as an adult visual novel on January 30th, 2004. Toned-down versions came later, allowing it to reach general audiences. Studio Deen’s anime adaptation premiered on January 7th, 2006.
4. Claire Elstein (Bladedance of Elementalers)
Bladedance of Elementalers is all about knee-high socks and zettai ryouiki. The anime ending theme all but confirms it. Claire is one of the more tsundere and fiery members of Kamito’s harem. She had an unfortunate upbringing after her older sister incurred the wrath of the Fire Elemental Lord. Claire changed her name to Claire Rouge after Areishia Spirit Academy’s headmistress invited her to the academy. Though she treats Kamito like a servant, she dreams of Kamito making her his slave.
Yu Shimizu and Hanpen Sakura released the original Bladedance of Elementalers light novel series between December 24th, 2010, and March 25th, 2019. Media Factory published all twenty volumes and one extra in the MF Bunko J imprint. TNK’s anime adaptation premiered on July 14th, 2014.
5. Nino Nakano (The Quintessential Quintuplets)
Nino is the only Nakano sister to wear knee-high socks and show good zettai ryouiki, which makes her the best sister. She’s also the tsundere of the group, which is another point in her favor. Nino vies for Futaro Uesugi’s affections, making her a rival for the rest of her sisters. In a cultured world, Futaro would get the harem ending.
Negi Haruba released the original The Quintessential Quintuplets manga series between August 9th, 2017, and February 19th, 2020. Kodansha published all fourteen volumes in Weekly Shonen Magazine. Tezuka Productions’ anime adaptation premiered on January 10th, 2019.
