Normally, you would come across a hentai manga with the name After School Vanilla and expect a pretty ordinary, cutesy anthology of stories. Vanilla hentai usually ends up like that, with standard sexual acts and heartwarming, simple stories. If you go into this manga expecting just that, though, you’re going to be thrown for a loop. While some of the chapters in After School Vanilla follow that formula, artist Key isn’t afraid to get deviant and toss some surprising fetishes into the mix in this collection of erotic stories.
Take the first chapter, Splash, for example. In this, a young man with glasses just barely manages to run into an elevator at school. The only other person inside is his beautiful, slender and incredibly tsundere senpai. The two briefly talk about their club responsibilities before a sudden malfunction causes them to get trapped in the elevator. Our protagonist is willing to wait it out, but the senpai has one issue: she really needs to go pee. Thankfully, our bespectacled hero is so madly in love with her, he’s willing to help her out by swallowing her pee so that she can relieve herself without causing an accident in the elevator. She’s wary to accept the incredibly perverted proposal but eventually accepts. Once her legs give out and she accidentally lands her crotch right on her underclassman’s face, however, things escalate really quick.
Considering this book is called After School Vanilla, I was certainly expecting a way softer start than this. There are 9 other chapters in this 224-page collection, so deciding to open with this one was an absolutely wild power play by the artist, Key. I loved the look of our bladder-challenged senpai, with her petite body and silky white hair complimenting each other really nicely. Despite the wildly deviant personality of her underclassman, there was something slightly romantic about the way the two came together in the elevator that made this chapter a joy to read.
The next chapter in After School Vanilla isn’t any less perverted, either. Titled Hitomi, this story focuses on a young man named Obiishi. He’s dating a gorgeous blonde haired fashionista that he meets up with after work all the time. The two also spend plenty of time back at her place fucking like rabbits. One day, while the two are fooling around, Obiishi looks toward the window and notices that his girlfriend’s younger sister is staring at them as they have sex. He doesn’t mention it at all and ends up finding out that her name is Hitomi. She’s shy around strangers and doesn’t have many friends, which might help explain why she decides to secretly watch the two have sex. The next time Obiishi spots her, he gets into it as secretly interacts with her while fucking his girlfriend. Things only escalate from there, culminating in the two meeting face to face for an unforgettable night alone in the house.
Obviously, this is another chapter that doesn’t quite fit the vanilla tag to a T. While the actual sexual activity in the book is pretty tame, the voyeurism angle and secret cheating add an edge to the otherwise plain and vanilla events of the chapter. The plain face and silky black hair of Hitomi contrast nicely with the tall figure and shining hair of her older sister, and while their faces are drawn pretty similar, it ends up fitting the story since they’re sisters. There aren’t many follow-up stories or sequel chapters in After School Vanilla, but I’d love to see more of these three and their unique, incredibly perverted relationship.
No matter which story you’re reading, the art in After School Vanilla is incredibly expressive and well-done. There’s a sharp, detailed quality to the style of Key that makes his art instantly recognizable and an absolute delight to look at. Characters have soft, expressive faces and well-defined anatomy that I loved to look at. Whether it was a serious scene, a sexy one or even a funny one, the facial reactions from the guys and girls of each story gave me plenty of enjoyment. The quality of the sex scenes are just as sharp, too. There’s a surprising amount of detail put into the sexual anatomy of every character, making the uncensored artwork in this FAKKU release a major incentive to pick this book up. There’s a surprisingly varied amount of scenarios and acts in the book, too. Certainly, more than I was expecting from a hentai manga with a simple title like After School Vanilla.
Of all the chapters in the anthology, one of my favorites has got to be Toy Girl. In this story, a young brash boy is hanging out in the room of his friend Nayuta, an energetic girl with a cute ponytail and an adorable face. The two are childhood friends, so our protagonist comes over and makes himself at home all the time. Today, he happens to spot something weird sticking out from behind one of Nayuta’s pillows. Before she can stop him, he pulls it out and discovers a petite, pink dildo. Nayuta freaks out, and in the spur of the moment tells her friend this: if it’ll make them even, she’ll let him ask for one thing and, no matter what it is, she’ll do it. Our hero decides to request that he get to use Nayutas vibrator on her, so she complies. Obviously, though, the action doesn’t stop there and the childhood friends soon play with more than just her vibrator.
Nayuta is an incredibly cute character. She’s brash and bubbly, but the way she shuts down and gets incredibly shy and nervous once her friend discovers her dildo is a delight. Both of their brash personalities bounce off of each other in the beginning, but once the two starts getting intimate, they come together in an incredibly satisfying way, leading to one of the most heartwarming stories in a surprisingly deviant and perverted collection of seemingly vanilla tales.
