A lot of times, the appeal of a hentai story isn’t purely in the sex scenes. Sure, those parts are important, but the characters themselves are far more important. A solid story that sees characters grow and change over the course of the chapter is what elevates a good manga to a great one. A story about a slutty magical girl is fine, but a story where you see a shy and timid magical girl reach her limit and reveal the truly kinky and sexual side of her personality is even greater. In Every Girl Has Her Thorns, Hisasi delivers a variety of stories that perfectly illustrate unique character dynamics like these in each and every chapter.
And trust me when I say that there are plenty of chapters in this book. While the volume clocks in at a regular size of 209 pages, it’s packed to the brim with 16 different delightful stories. A lot of these adventures focus on a variety of horny highschoolers, from a chapter about a little sister obsessed with seducing her older brother to another about a highschool delinquent who struggles to impress the hot girl who keeps on bullying him. Other stories ditch the highschool setting to tackle a variety of other scenarios, though, like a horny scientist conducting tests on his neighbor or a Summer fling between two teens in a boring beach town. The variety of stories is great, and even with most of them running between just 10-15 pages in length, you get plenty of dynamic characters and engaging stories out of the anthology of adventures in Every Girl Has Her Thorns.
The first five chapters in Every Girl Has Her Thorns actually run a much shorter length, clocking in at either eight pages or even four pages. Those brisk page counts are justified by the fact that all of these chapters are rendered in stunning full color, providing readers with over 30 pages of gorgeous colored Hisasi artwork to drool over. Soft shadows and spots of glossy light are gorgeously rendered on every inch of the beautiful bodies in these chapters, adding a magnificent sense of depth to the illustrations that make their voluptuous figures look even softer and more natural. The colors used in each chapter are perfectly selected, as well, with the women rocking natural hair colors yet incredibly vivid and unique eyes that make their faces pop on each page. The eyes of each girl in Every Girl Has Her Thorns are already incredibly bright and beautiful, but these colored pages make them stand out even more, making these opening full-color stories some of the best parts of the entire anthology.
Rest assured, though, that even in black & white the artwork of Hisasi is absolutely incredible. Expressive and varied faces are complimented by gorgeously rendered hair that adds a unique flair to the art only Hisasi could be responsible for. There are a fair amount of cute and silly moments in the stories of Every Girl Has Her Thorns, and they’re delightfully drawn to help elevate the hilarity and cuteness of each scene. The more erotic aspects of the art are drawn just as well, with everyone in the book having soft bodies, delicate tongues, and jaw-dropping figures. Small and petite girls are delightfully rendered with sharp hips and flat stomachs, while more curvy girls have plush thighs and incredible breasts that spill out of their clothes. No matter the character, every inch of sexual anatomy on the guys and girls in this volume are gorgeously rendered with incredible detail, making the uncensored artwork a welcome treat. When characters embrace and the sex scenes start erupting, Hisasi draws the women with blushing red faces and oodles of sweat and juices flowing from their bodies that help add an erotic and dynamic flair to the action.
The sharp artwork in Every Girl Has Her Thorns is complimented nicely by the incredibly varied and unique character designs of each girl in the story. To start with, there’s an impressive amount of different body types on display in this volume. Some women are short-stacks with a small height and huge bust, while others have a petite washboard frame that contrasts delightfully with the larger bodies of the men they fool around with. Others still are tall and curvy bombshells with seductive eyes or thin girls-next-door with a tall body and massive chest. The variety is delightful, and it’s elevated further by the stark differences in every other aspect of the women. From their hairstyles to their clothes and personalities and faces, I never felt like I was seeing double or getting too much of the same kind of character in this book. As is usually the case with these kinds of books, the same care hasn’t been put into the men at all. Almost every male in this book is either an averagely built guy with straight black hair or an averagely built guy with straight brown hair. The similarities are so staggering that at one point, I mistook the protagonist of one chapter for the male from the previous story, utterly confused as to why he was there now.
There are plenty of incredible stories in Every Girl Has Her Thorns, but one of my favorites has to be the chapter titled Abrupt Love. In this story, shy schoolboy Akira has a crush on a girl in his class and doesn’t know how to make his first move. Desperate for help, he decides to visit Maki, his tall and busty 20-something-year-old neighbor who he’s seen plenty of times at meetings and around town, but never visited the bedroom of. When he reveals that he came to her for help because he figured she’d have a lot of experience given how pretty she is, she gets turned on and instantly proposes a plan; to impress his crush, Akira needs to learn about sex. From that day forward, Maki regularly forces herself upon Akira in her room, toying with him sexually and slowly turning him into just as much of a deviant as she is.
One of the most striking parts of this chapter was the incredible body of Maki. I’ve rarely ever seen a shape like hers in hentai, with a tall and skinny body that’s complemented by a set of large yet perky breasts. A lot of times, that kind of body type would come across as looking fake or unrealistic, but something about her proportions, in particular, is surprisingly successful and incredibly erotic. The way she takes control and bosses Akira around is incredible, and I could have easily read an entire book of just her dominating the shy and inexperienced boy she claimed as her plaything.
Overall, Every Girl Has Her Thorns is an absolutely incredibly anthology of erotic, unforgettable hentai stories. The quantity of chapters is matched by amazing quality, and the beefy amount of full-color pages left me impressed and satisfied as well. With an impressive amount of variety in characters, body types and stories here, there’s guaranteed to be something for everybody in this volume.
