Mobile game developer Cygames made a name for itself in the West by partnering with Nintendo on their mobile RPG Dragalia Lost. With a lush, bright art style, a decent plot, and plenty of characters to collect, Dragalia Lost managed to push even Fire Emblem Heroes out of Nintendo’s top spot when it released in 2018. Now Cygames will take its successful formula and combine it with… pinball?!
Now, I haven’t touched a pinball-related video game since Pokémon Pinball, but thankfully the mechanics are still very similar. Characters you collect take the place of pinballs on each board, ricocheting around the field defeating smaller enemies and collecting points. Eventually, a boss will appear with attacks that take up the entire field. Luckily, your characters have special attacks of their own that’ll take over the stage as they’re activated. The promo trailer below shows this in more detail, along with a look at some of the characters that can be collected along the way.
Interestingly enough, it looks like Cygames is forgoing the lush, 3D backgrounds and chibi characters of Dragalia Lost for a more old fashioned 16-bit style, and saving all its art prowess for its character art. This doesn’t detract from the game at all, as the pixilated style makes sense for both the nature of pinball and the fact that characters need to double as pinballs on a fast-moving board. The best character art is found while utilizing the gacha system, rendering each character in exquisite detail and providing ample opportunity for fanservice. But even better than fanservice is the number of characters that manage to just be fun and wacky. Some notable examples include:
While the game is available now on iOS and Android in Japan, there’s no word yet on whether or not the game will make its way to the States and beyond just yet. For now, there’s an unofficial English Twitter account for the game at @WorldFlipperENG, with character profiles and links to an unofficial Discord as well. With all of these weird and fun characters to collect, this is definitely shaping up to be a game I hope makes it to the States in some form or another.
