As the relentless pace of this Summer anime season finally slows to make room for the upcoming Winter season, announcements are finally out as to which previously released anime seasons will get a new season. One anime on that renewal list is the 2019 isekai anime Ascendance of a Bookworm. Telling the story of an aspiring librarian that ends up reincarnating into the body of a young girl, Myne (formerly Motosu Urano) must use all of the knowledge she’s gained from her books to improve the lives of her friends and family as well as fulfill her own dream of owning her own public library.
But as with most isekai, coming from another world and having any kind of skill means things get complicated very quickly. And very soon, Myne’s extraordinary knowledge means her goals may have to be put on hold as events outside of Myne’s control conspire to crush both her and her dreams.
The main voice cast from the last two seasons returns to fulfill their roles in the third season. Previous character designers & chief animation directors Toshihisa Kaiya and Yoshiaki Yanagida also return, but only as character designers for this season so far. New additions to the crew include Haruka Matsunae as character designer, Noriko Otake as another chief animation director alongside Emiko Endo.
The third season is due for release during the Spring 2022 anime season. While that won’t be too long of a wait, it’ll be interesting to see how streaming will be handled going forward with the recent news that Funimation now owns Crunchyroll. Until then, seasons one and two are still available to stream on Crunchyroll, and the original light novel and the manga are available in English. It’s good to see this refreshing and uplifting isekai get another season amidst the deluge of plot-heavy anime that was released this previous season.
For those unfamiliar with Ascendance of a Bookworm, the official synopsis is as follows: “Ascendance of a Bookworm follows the life of college student and aspiring librarian Motosu Urano who is transported to another world after an unfortunate accident. When she is reborn as Main, the daughter of a poor soldier, she makes it her mission to make books more freely available to everyone in this new world.”
