Who’s Your Favorite Yandere Girl in Anime?

One fun trope over the past decade has been the rise of dere characters, who are filled with love for a main character but are conflicted by other emotions. The most famous of these is tsundere, conflicted characters who hide their fear and anxiety behind a wall of sharp-tongued anger, like Taiga from Toradora, Rin from Fate/stay night and House from House M.D., but there are other dere types, including:
- Kuudere. Cool + loving, like Kanade from Angel Beats or Ayanami Rei from the new Eva movies (but not the original series).
- Dandere. Silent + loving, Yuki Nagato being the trope maker here.
- Nyandere. Character is a catgirl or acts in a cat-like fawning fashion. Hmm, Hideri comes to mind for some reason.
- Zondere. A loving character who happens to be a zombie. I swear, I am not making these up!
Then there’s yandere, the well-established genre of females who love a boy so much, they become obsessed to the point of violence and murder. For some reason yandere characters (and their seiyu) are always wildly popular with fans, and go on to create memes across the Internet. Some great yandere characters have included Rena, Shion and Mion from Higurashi When They Cry, Yuno from Mirai Nikki, and my own favorite, Ayase from Oreimo. Another show with these themes is the School Days anime, which featured a super-dark ending in which Sekai and Kotonoha both go yandere on each other, though this ending is not part of the excellent uncensored hentai games we sell, and recommend highly. (Strictly speaking, the term yandere specifically refers to characters who are so deeply in love they’d commit violence. A related term is yangire, which would describe violent/deranged female characters without the love angle.)
