What Do You Do at the End of the World? Are You Busy? Will You Buy This Calendar?
If it seemed like there were a lot of anime series in 2017, there were…something like 170 different series, not counting one-off OAV releases or films. While it’s nice to have a lot of anime to watch, I consider it a danger to the industry since so few shows make money, and some of my favorites, like Scum’s Wish, outright fail. In this post I’ll show you the internal pages for one show I liked a lot, called WorldEnd, aka Sukasuka, also known as Shūmatsu Nani Shitemasu ka? Isogashii Desu ka? Sukutte Moratte Ii Desu ka? (The joke is that this title means “What are you doing for the end of the world?” but the words can also mean “What are you doing this weekend?”)
It’s 500 years since the human race nearly went extinct at the hands of fearsome invaders known as Beasts. The story follows a main character who awakes after 500 years then finds himself surrounded by young girls, called Leprechauns, who are tasked with wielding powerful weapons that defend the world they live in. The show is visually gorgeous and the writing is deep and interesting, based on the light novel by Akira Kareno. I loved the highly developed SF story, and now I love the Worldend calendar that got released.
One small note about buying merchandise. It should be considered good manners as fans to support the shows we like — to cast our “dollar votes” as the economists say — for the shows we like, so we will get more of them in the future. If you watch anime, it’s great if you can find a way to support the studios you like, either by buying artbooks, figures or these excellent anime calendars. The industry, including J-List, thanks you!
