The Lure of the Japanese P.E. Uniform
The History of the “Bloomer” Japanese P.E. Uniform
One of the more popular cosplay categories you see from Japan is the iconic P.E. shorts and T-shirt, called “bloomers” (ブルマ) in Japanese, and in recent years they’ve become the subject of anime fanservice and fetish fanart nearly on par with shimapan striped panties.
The famous “bloomer” Japanese P.E. uniform first appeared around the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, when newly created synthetic fibers such as Spandex and Lycra were coming into use. Once adopted for use with all children in Japanese schools, they quickly became a standardized thing, similar to the adoption of Japan’s iconic school swimsuits. The P.E. uniforms consists of elastic shorts plus a white T-shirt with sleeve and neck colors matching the bottom.
