Fans of Black Torch should keep this series on their radar. It’s the same basic premise: a guy with spiritual abilities runs into a powerful spirit, takes a fatal wound, and bonds with another powerful spirit to save the day. However, Nue’s Exorcist (Nue no Onmyoji) seems to have more waifus than Black Torch. Indeed, the word “harem” got thrown around here and there. Heck, the spirit our protagonist is bonded to is an older sister-type waifu. Let’s take a closer look. At the series, I mean.

Nue’s Exorcist News, Cast, Staff
The spiritual protagonist, his dangerous spirit contractor, and a school idol are as follows:
- Gakuro Yajima — Kaito Miura (Rokuro Kiriyama from Tougen Anki). Gakuro is a timid boy with great spiritual abilities.
- Nue — Saori Onishi (Yuki Sumi from Oshi no Ko). Nue is a powerful spirit who is greatly interested in Gakuro.
- Kazusa Suo — Sayumi Suzushiro (Nijika Ijichi from Bocchi the Rock!). Kazusa is a school idol and a spirit exorcist.
Gakuro will follow in his father’s footsteps sometime in the summer of 2027. Studio Hibari is producing the anime adaptation, with Hiroyuki Hashimoto directing and Hiroshi Seko writing. Shunpei Mochizuki designs the characters, and monaca provides the music.
Nue’s Exorcist has an official website and a Twitter (X) account with more information about the series and the key visuals.
Nue’s Exorcist Stumbles into Battle
I know I brought up Black Torch for comparison, and you could probably throw in Bleach or similar series, but the protagonist differs from them. Gakuro is a timid guy willing to be a gopher for some bullies to “keep the peace.” Those bullies eventually get what’s coming to them when a powerful spirit destroys some stuff. But the good guys show up to reverse the disaster and heal them. I was disappointed.
Gakuro still gets superpowers, and he gets the job of protecting his school from evil spirits. His spirit partner, Nue, shows up at school as his “older sister who isn’t related by blood,” which helps his reputation. The trailer looks pretty faithful to the manga, and I’m curious to see how they handle the first fight. One of the bullies loses an arm, and though Bleach didn’t shy away from that, I wonder if this series might. Also, I want to see the hot waifus. The manga shows them off well enough, especially Natsuki Kuniruri.
