Wearing her iconic “sanma” shirt (the Pacific saury fish that’s reminiscent of a katana), Kinako is the idealized kemomimi, sporting a fluffy tail and a tendency to bite her owner! Nani?! My Cat is a Kawaii Girl…?!

40hara (Shimahara) is a prolific Japanese artist who has worked with doujin circles and independently. His artistic skills have also been employed on anime series, including the anime adaptation of his own original series, IyaPan: I Want You To Show Me Your Panties With a Disgusted Face. If you love disgusted girls showing you their panties, check out J-List’s stock of IyaPan Blu-Rays and 40hara’s original IyaPan doujins.

So where does a cat girl fit into things? My Cat is a Kawaii Girl is a slice-of-life series based around 40hara’s actual cat. That’s right, Kinako’s antics are inspired by Shimahara’s experiences living with his cat, including her inexplicable desire to knock objects off surfaces. Then again, the real-life Kinako is an orange cat — they’re not exactly known for being the smartest in the litter!

The World Revolves Around Kinako

The OG kitty is pretty cute, but the anthropomorphized Kinako is even cuter! It’s no wonder that Kinako has inspired exquisite 1/6th scale figures, plus full-color artbooks featuring the very best of 40hara’s Kinako-related illustrations.

Only the all-consuming attention a cat demands could prompt an illustrator to make an entire series about his pet. Through My Cat is a Kawaii Girl and adorable slice-of-life moments, 40hara shows the important bond between humans and pets. We might not speak the same language, but we can both communicate in affection, security, and mutual trust. That’s a language that transcends species!

We’re surprised Kinako hasn’t gotten her own anime yet. We’d watch endless hours of an adorable catgirl and her antics. In the meantime, we’ll have to settle for these cosplayers and their adorable Kinako impersonations!

40hara’s My Cat is a Kawaii Girl is a true love letter to cat ownership, including the highs and lows of an intelligent animal with a challenging personality.
