Let’s be honest for a moment: when it comes to reviews, whether it’s movies, games, or H-manga, most of the time the review is an encouragement of the product, not a personal endorsement. That’s not the case with Imperfect Marble by Key, an English-translated doujin published by FAKKU that I have tucked away on my “naughty shelf” at home. Given the chance to review Imperfect Marble, I couldn’t resist convincing my fellow degenerates to buy a copy.
True to its name, Imperfect Marble is a study in complicated love, but that doesn’t mean it’s all lovey-dovey couplings. This anthology is packed with unique characters and settings. Each can get your blood pumping in different ways.

Statues, Carved and Chipped

Imperfect Marble is an anthology of eight stories across nine distinct chapters, plus bonus full-color and behind-the-scenes content. As with all FAKKU-published works, it’s fully uncensored. That’s an absolute godsend for Imperfect Marble.
Key is an incredible artist, with a masterful understanding of what makes erotic acts enjoyable. Sure, anyone can draw a naked gyaru going down on some guy’s lightning rod. But there’s a stark difference between “spank material” and “this one belongs on the shelf.” Not every doujin should pretend to be high art, but Imperfect Marble takes itself a little more seriously. The anthology blends genuine characterization with surprising humor and very realistic eroticism.
Each story in Imperfect Marble weaves a throbbing tension between its characters. Stories range from the fluttering emotions of young love to the forbidden desire of an age gap, or twisted obsession enacted on the wrong person. Sometimes, such as the two-parter “Akira-chan Desperately Wants to Suck a Penis,” it’s a highly amusing take on a very horny high school girl.

No matter the story, Key introduces the characters and their relationships naturally, making the sexual elements part of the story, not just the goal for the final few pages.
Again, reflecting its name, Key has sculpted every one of Imperfect Marble’s female characters like an angel. Not in the sense of literal perfection, but in the — dare I say — imperfect way a mere mortal tries to capture a goddess’s radiance. I could stare at so many panels, fascinated by the beauty lying beyond the raw eroticism.
Imperfect Marble, Perfect Production
Much as I’d like to muse on the border between artistic creation and smut, there’s no beating around the bush (beating off the bush? beating into the bush?). At the end of the day, Imperfect Marble is 222 pages of excellent H-manga material.
As I mentioned at the start of the article, I don’t often get to recommend a product I personally own and want others to own, too. If you haven’t bought a physical FAKKU book before, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how sturdy it is — this isn’t a flimsy shonen paperback. The pages can take a beating (sorry) and hold up through plenty of nighttime adventures. The thicker pages hold black ink really nicely, which is appreciated given how much detail Key has put into their artwork. Plus, the volume is full-sized and comes with a slipcover (though it’s a less obvious NSFW doujin without it).

Speaking of FAKKU products, I have to give huge props to the production team behind Imperfect Marble. As always, FAKKU’s translations are superb, and translator Andrew Castle and letterer Aaryn Lewis did excellent work on this volume. The English translations capture a range of ages, accents, personalities, noises, and more, without feeling like anything’s missing.
If there’s one reason you should buy official translated works (beyond supporting the artist, of course!), it’s the natural ease of reading in English. Fan translations often feel clunky, forcing you to focus on the images rather than the characters. That’s unfortunate and would absolutely ruin Imperfect Marble. I’m really thankful to have the English translation, and that it’s in such high quality.
Why I Recommend Imperfect Marble

Imperfect Marble by Key has something for everyone. Each of the eight narratives captures a different concept of impurity and imperfection. But they won’t be haunting your nightmares anytime soon (Shindo-L, I’m looking at you).
My favorite stories from this anthology are “HimeHajime” and “Alluring Yuu.” The first is a cheeky, funny romp set on New Year’s Eve. The second is a thoughtful exploration of forbidden love crossing a large age gap. On the surface, these stories couldn’t be more different. Yet Key’s consistent storytelling and art style make them fit together naturally, each a palate cleanser to the other.

Anthologies can be hit-and-miss, but here, I’d be hard-pressed to find a chapter I’d consistently skip, even if I routinely return to specific ones. The erotic antics lean more toward the vanilla than anything else. But the context of each story makes them smuttier, darker, and overall, more thrilling. Do yourself a favor, and pick up Imperfect Marble by Key from the J-List store. You won’t regret it — and that’s my personal guarantee!
