Let’s lay our cards out at the jump: Undead-san no Bukiyou na Seishun (Ms. Undead’s Awkward Age) is not our typical ecchi manga. There’s no nudity, no intimacy, and no sexy magic systems. So, why cover it here, alongside such great and cultured manga like The Abandoned Prince and the Seventh Princess and Isekai Koushoku Musouroku? Even if the ecchi elements are limited to the main character’s large (covered) bust and some upskirt shots, it’s a dang fine manga series. It’s closer to Haha no Ai wa Mama Naranai! in that regard. Let’s take a closer look at the new undead waifu on the block.

Who made the newest undead waifu? Hone released the original Undead-san no Bukiyou na Seishun manga series on March 6th, 2026. Houbunsha has since published one volume in Comic Fuz. The series is also available on Twicomi.
The New Life of an Undead Girl in Undead-san no Bukiyou na Seishun
Let’s talk about the cute and sexy undead girl now. Sana Tsukuyomi is a high school idol. She excels in every subject, from gym to math, and she looks perfect doing it. Well, she died over summer break and returned to school as a jiangshi, a Chinese-style zombie. She deals with the typical jiangshi problem: rigor mortis.

That gives the health committee member Hiyoshi a reason to stick by the undead school idol. He does his best to help her get through different school activities, even if they look lovey-dovey. Hiyoshi helps her change shoes, eat, and even raise her hand to answer questions. Hiyoshi brings some light and life into her undead existence, and her cute blushing moments just won me over right away.
The Undead Girls of Undead-san no Bukiyou na Seishun
Who likes proud princess-type girls and cute best friends with weak constitutions? I know I do! Sana is one of those proud girls from a rich family who acts cool and aloof. Then she meets the right person, starts blushing, and kind of acts like a tsundere. I say “kind of” because she doesn’t get angry; she gets embarrassed and tries to cover for her words or actions, and she gets jealous when Hiyoshi’s female friend shows up. The mutual feelings are there, and I can’t wait to see the confession scene. For these reasons and more, she is our Best Girl.

The other almost dead girl is Sekiguchi. She wears a mask because of her ill health, and we need more mask-wearing girls in our media. She’s kind, caring, and dang perceptive, but she’s also silly, which makes her cute. Coping with her own illnesses has allowed Sekiguchi to diagnose people and offer remedies right away. And I like seeing characters use their own bad experiences to help others. However, I don’t think this is going the harem route. Sekiguchi is clearly the cute friend, and she even pushes Hiyoshi to keep helping Sana and be there for her.
The Bandaged Art of Undead-san no Bukiyou na Seishun
The ecchi elements come primarily from our undead waifu Sana. She has curves in all the right places, and long legs for days. Her uniform hugs her figure, so we can tell just how gifted she is in those areas. Hiyoshi gets every chance to get close to her, from helping her put on her shoes (why no upskirt shot there, Sensei?!) to wiping down her body to remove spiritual impurities.

The artist doesn’t mince words about whether she’s a zombie or a jiangshi. He made sure to give her stitches all over the place. It highlights that she might have been cut apart and put back together. That might not be to everyone’s taste, but from what I read, there’s no gore in this rom-com series. We’re told how and why Sana is a jiangshi, and I won’t spoil it here, but we don’t see anything terrible.
A Deathly Conclusion
We get a cozy slice-of-unlife rom-com series featuring a jiangshi version 2.0 and a kind boy who wants to help people. The ecchi moments aren’t as frequent as I would like, but the cute romance moments are more than enough to make up for it. I would absolutely accept an R-18 version of this same series where we see whether jiangshis can reproduce.
Undead-san no Bukiyou na Seishun gets a 4/5 on the Megumi rating scale. The jiangshi elements stand out to me. It’s easily accepted in a world that otherwise doesn’t have a prevalent magical atmosphere. I have more questions than the series — as of right now — is prepared to answer. This doesn’t detract from the story; it’s just something that might nag at you from time to time.
Want more undead waifu action? We at J-List recommend Maid of the Dead. Well, the waifus aren’t zombies, but there are waifus, and there are zombies. The only difference is that maids mow down hordes of zombies.
