Why Should You Buy Physical (Subtitled) Anime Blu-rays from Japan?

Streaming is obviously an effective way to distribute anime to fans around the world. But it’s far from perfect. A title can vanish from Crunchyroll’s catalog overnight if a licensing deal expires. Or the platform decides that sexy fanservice might be too “problematic” for our modern era.

The solution, of course, is to buy physical anime Blu-rays and keep them in your collection. The problem with a company like J-List, which is an import shop (well, an export shop from our point of view), is that most anime Blu-ray releases here are in Japanese only, with no subtitles. Happily, the huge numbers of “inbound” tourists visiting Japan created a boom in Blu-ray titles released with English subtitles. (Subtitled anime games for Nintendo Switch are also getting lots of love.)

There’s another important reason to buy commercial anime Blu-ray releases. Streaming has helped raise income at anime studios, but the bulk of income for the staff that actually creates the anime we love still comes from Blu-ray sales. Sales of physical media also send an important signal to the studios, and often determine which shows will get a second season.

Why Blu-rays Are Taking Over the Anime World

One trend we’ve been happy to see here at J-List is that Blu-rays have now overtaken DVDs as the preferred format for fans to enjoy their anime (and sexy JAV and hentai). Here are some reasons:

We love the Blue Archive series. It has so many cute waifus for fans to obsess over and buy naughty Blu-rays or JAV cosplay parodies of. But the series has a great Blu-ray release with full subtitle support for English, Chinese, and Korean!

This is a special film because it’s the “first” Gainax work, before they brought us titles like Nadia and Neon Genesis Evangelion. It’s an amazing film: the story of a country on a fictional version of Earth trying to launch a space program. All the luminaries of the era were involved: animator Hideaki Anno, character designer Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, and music by Ryuichi Sakamoto.
