Man, it’s been a while since we got a good detective anime. A Pen, Handcuffs, and a Common-Law Marriage (Pen to Wappa to Jijitsu Kon) has some darker elements, such as a murder and a (fake) bombing, but it doesn’t look close to what we see in Detective Conan or Ron Kamonohashi’s Forbidden Deductions. Rather, I actually laughed right after this unlikely couple solved the bombing. Buckle up; things get great from here.

Eiji and Tsugumi will solve their first case together sometime in January 2027. Studio EMT Squared animates the anime adaptation, with Takaaki Ishiyama serving as director. Shigeru Murakoshi writes the series, Miyuki Nakamura designs the characters, and Kana Hashiguchi provides the music.
The unlikely crime-solving duo is as follows:
- Eiji Kirisame — Tomoaki Maeno (Veldora Tempest from That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime). Eiji is a very dedicated 40-year-old detective.
- Tsugumi Kuchinashi — Inori Minase (Itsuki Nakano from The Quintessential Quintuplets). Tsugumi is a mute high school girl with a sketchpad and a keen detective’s mind.

A Pen, Handcuffs, and a Common-Law Marriage Helps a Detective Solve Crimes
Upon further reflection, it’s been entirely too long since we got a cute girl who can’t draw, yet chooses to draw. Tsugumi might give Rukia a run for her money when it comes to her crude yet informative drawings. Tsugumi is mute and communicates with people using a pen and a sketchpad. I don’t know why she’s mute, but I find the antics she pulls with a stoic expression endlessly adorable.
The veteran detective, more than twice her age, doesn’t share this opinion. The age gap is important because Tsugumi is in love with him and uses her keen mind to get him to sign a marriage certificate. The whole setup works, and I can’t wait to see the anime adaptation. I hope they go over why Tsugumi is mute and why she’s so attached to Eiji. I don’t think it’s love at first sight, not with this series.

Forty-year-old detective Eiji Kirisame has found maybe the strangest witness of his life: a silent high school girl named Tsugumi Kuchinashi who was at the scene of the crime. Her statements mostly consist of shoddy doodles on a drawing pad, but Eiji is no stranger to piecing together the truth from limited evidence. He’ll take every page seriously if it might help solve the case. But why does the last page say… “Will you marry me?!”
Shinichi Sawaragi and Tank Gasuyama released the original A Pen, Handcuffs, and a Common-Law Marriage manga series on December 23, 2022. Hakusensha has published seven volumes in Young Animal.
