Kanteishi (Kari) — The Comedy Isekai Busting Out All Over!

The spring anime season is in full swing, bringing even more isekai titles. We have sequels, such as Tensura, Re:Zero, Isekai Nonbiri Nouka, Ascendance of a Bookworm, and Reborn as a Vending Machine. Then come all the new ones. How do you choose what to watch if you already have isekai fatigue? I watch comedies or fan service versions now, isekai with low stakes and relaxing stories. One that caught my eye (and nearly put that eye out) is Kanteishi (Kari), an isekai comedy with an eye-popping costar. Here are two massive reasons and a few smaller ones why I picked up this show!

No girlfriend? No problem! April 14 is Black Day in South Korea, when single men mark the occasion by eating black noodles. They missed out on Valentine’s Day chocolate on February 14 and had no one to give white chocolate to on White Day, March 14, so April 14 is their day! J-List is celebrating with a huge 15% sale on all Japan-based products through April 20. Start browsing now!

Appraising the Premise of Kanteishi (Kari)

Kanteishi (Kari), short for Saikyou no Shokugyou wa Yuusha demo Kenja demo Naku Kanteishi (Kari) Rashii desu yo? (The strongest job is apparently not a hero or a sage, but an appraiser (provisional)!), embraces the trend of lengthy titles adapted from self-publishing sites. 鑑定士 (かんていし, kanteishi) means “appraiser,” and 仮 (かり, kari) means “temporary, provisional, interim.” The story and setting feature the typical video game mechanics, plus the subversive theme of a supporting class rising to godly heights. It’s a comedy, though!

Kanteishi (Kari) Episode 1 Muscular Hibiki Expert Eye
Kanteishi (Kari) Episode 1 Emalia Steinbart Elf Archer

The story begins with Hibiki Manabe (voice: Hisako Kanemoto — Ami Mizuno, Sailor Mercury from Sailor Moon), a short king who attracts the attention of older ladies. Hibiki’s entrance into a magical world filled with busty elves and terrifying monsters is unimpressive — no Truck-kun involved in Kanteishi (Kari). He opened a classroom door on the day summer vacation started, and he landed in a field with a horny rabbit chasing him down. The rabbit monster sported a horn. Yes, this is a comedy!

Kanteishi (Kari) Episode 1 Emalia Popped Buttons

Hibiki’s assigned class is “Appraiser” — a decidedly uninspiring role. The anime clearly follows the familiar loser-author wish fulfillment formula popular on Shousetsuka ni Narou. And show me an aspiring isekai author who wouldn’t wish for a busty elf to spend the night with. Enter Emalia Steinbart (voice: Shizuka Itou — Tortura Torture from ’Tis Time for “Torture,” Princess), the first person Hibiki meets, a socially awkward noble elf who reacts to his admission that he’s from another world with a classic comedic spit take.

Emalia’s Breakout Role in Kanteishi (Kari) — Busting Up and Out!

How did Hibiki focus on his status screen instead of the heaving mounds of elven mammary flesh in front of him? I don’t know. But those “twin peaks” are the two eye-popping reasons to watch Kanteishi (Kari). Emalia has a recurring joke of popping the buttons that struggle to contain her bountiful bosom! And her character quirks add a comedic dimension to her role as an oppai fan service machine. Wear eye protection as you navigate her style of blunt speaking, which has rendered her friendless and party-less. That’s right — Emalia, the adventurer elf, has never joined an adventuring party.

Kanteishi (Kari) ED Lilian Pajama Party
Kanteishi (Kari) ED Jewel Pajama Party
Kanteishi (Kari) ED Ivel Pajama Party

While Kanteishi (Kari) presents Emalia as the primary source of fan service, Hibiki’s designation as the Cougar Killer describes how his boyish looks attract older ladies. The ending theme features pajama party glamour shots of the ladies in Hibiki’s new life in another world. Lilian, the child, teams up with Hibiki and her guardian, Claude, forming a party. That pair is the source of the “hero or a sage” part of the unabridged title of Kanteishi (Kari). But the other ladies all orbit Hibiki, drawn to his charms as an adorable lad and blessings from the Chief God.

Kanteishi (Kari) Episode 3 Emalia In A Hot Spring
Kanteishi (Kari) Episode 3 Ivel Listens To Steelia And Emalia
Kanteishi (Kari) Episode 3 Elf Ear Censorship

Unfortunately, but unsurprisingly, the fan service in Kanteishi (Kari) will be of the PG-13 variety (steamy and creatively opportunistic censorship) to match its jocular and simple art style. Be on the lookout for Barbie doll anatomy in the bath scenes. Still, all the “twin peaks” jokes surrounding Emalia from her obsessed head maid, Steelia (voice: Sora Tokui — T.M. Opera O from Uma Musume: Pretty Derby), plus the button projectiles, will have you laughing as you ogle barely covered mounds and crevices.

Kanteishi (Kari) — Meta Humor, Meta Narrative, Meta Isekai!

Kanteishi (Kari) ED Majin Goddess
Kanteishi (Kari) Episode 3 Majin Goddess Of Magic

Even the gods are fodder for humor in the self-aware Kanteishi (Kari). The god who plucked Hibiki from Japan granted him two legendary powers that are pure video game mechanics: Tutorial Session and Expert Eye. Yes, Hibiki hasn’t even finished the tutorial first quest of his video game life by the end of the third episode. And the goddess of magic, Majin, bickers with the Chief God as if he were her henpecked husband. Shades of Hera and Zeus, there.

Is there an overarching plot in Kanteishi (Kari)? Perhaps. The interplay between the gods hints at one thread involving a hero and a sage’s trial. While the mysterious Ivel (voice: Youko Hikasa — Rias Gremory from High School DxD), who makes Steelia jealous, suggests another. And Hibiki’s dreams of his friends in Japan as if he were on summer vacation suggest a third option.

But do you need one as long as you’re dodging buttons from Emalia’s cannons? Not me!

Kanteishi (Kari) [The strongest job is apparently not a hero or a sage, but an appraiser (provisional)!] streams on Crunchyroll with Japanese audio and multiple language subtitles.

Thanks for reading this post about busty elf buttons poking your eyes out! Have you watched Kanteishi (Kari) yet? Do you plan to? Would you carry a pouch of spare buttons for Emalia? Share your thoughts in the comments!
