There’s a lot to love about Sōsō no Furīren’s Fern. Especially the pout. Fern’s pout is gold. Travel with us, as we meditate on “pout potential” through Fern cosplays.
Fern’s pout packs gravitas because she’s stern and cultured (in the traditional sense of the word). She has standards, and that makes Fern a quality lady. Gentlemen of culture (in the /anime Reddit sense of the word) know Fern will take effort to win over.
But the prize is great.
If Fern’s the cultured man’s classy waifu, then these cultured Fern cosplays will cause cads to reconsider their chaotic and casual existence. Be a better person, for Fern!

Passive-Aggressive Ladies Persuade Ambitious Lovers
Think about it. Fern wears a Mormon Sunday dress but has all the 2D waifu appeal of a harem beach episode. Her high standards make her evocative. Clean white dresses and angry pouts are equipable items for a stern mage with classy expectations.
While you’ll never measure up (even if she were real), enjoy the chance to daydream about comforting laps and cloud watching with the lilac-haired mage though these Fern cosplays. Appreciate the obscured view.
A Brief Discourse on the Science of the Pout
I joke with my wife that she’s a living incarnation of Fern. But then she gives me death stares.
Like all characters in fiction, people in the author Kanehito Yamada’s or the illustrator Tsukasa Abe’s own lives likely inspired Fern. So, to really understand Fern, we need a theory about passive-aggressiveness. And the power of the pout.

Fern Cosplays Celebrate Fern’s Character
Fern’s parents died during the war, leaving her orphaned. Heiter, who belonged to Frieren’s original party, adopted Fern and was, no doubt, an awkward parent. Most men might struggle raising a daughter alone. Fern’s no-nonsense attitude and unrelenting manners (seen in her calling everyone “sir” or “ma’am”) are both a shield for her emotions and an artifact of her upbringing.
Are You Brave Enough to Enter The Alluring World of Goth Frieren Cosplay?
Fern’s passive-aggressiveness, the “I’m okay” when “Pissed Off” is writ clear on her face, pairs perfectly with Frieren’s character flaw. Frieren’s KY (Kuuki ga yomenai or, in English, “can’t read the air”) social awkwardness will ensure Frieren misses every pout. Two opposed flaws make for comedy gold. Also, Fern’s emotional fragility is an important counterpoint to Frieren’s social doofism. Put the sensitive one in the same pot as the insensitive one, and you’ve got the perfect ingredients for personal growth.
So, the theory goes like this: Fern’s pouting is pure defense. She won’t voice her feelings because she doesn’t want to feel hurt in return. Instead, she’ll telegraph her emotions so only the most empathetic of her companions knows what’s going on in her heart.
Anime Mirrors Life
If you’re an empath, you might find yourself frustrated by a Fern or two in your own life. And, if you’re a geek, then geeky Ferns who do better with cats or computers than humans might leave you smashing your head against the wall. In either case, take heart from the fact that you might be Fern’s lifeline to humanity.

Kana Ichinose Is a Seiyuu Queen in the Making
Can we take a moment to appreciate Kana Ichinose? The award-winning voice actress who voices Fern also voiced Suletta Mercury in Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury. Kana’s fandom is sure to grow, and she’ll take her place in some seiyuu hall of fame one day.
Plus, who could forget the name!
Frieren’s Foil: Fern Cosplays Celebrate the Perfect Sidekick
How do you write a good Dungeons & Dragons party? You create a hole in each character that only another party member can fix. Fern is a complex, well-defined character, and the perfect foil to Frieren. Ultimately, Frieren needs Fern just as much as Fern needs Stark. Those bonds of friendship make Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End the joy it is to watch.
Even so, high-bar Fern shines bright, especially in contrast to the flaccid isekai heroes and dithery waifus that dominate anime. There’s a place for all of them, sure. But there can only be one Pouting Queen. All hail Fern!
