One common trope in anime is romantic hook-ups with stepsisters, who aren’t related to the main character by blood. Let’s look at why this is such a common theme in modern imouto anime, and also rank the most popular anime stepsisters!

Why Do Anime Studios Love Stepsisters So Much?
We all know the setup: a brother and sister find themselves getting closer and closer romantically. But wait! How can they actually cross that line and enter into forbidden territory? Happily, they’re only step-siblings, so it’s perfectly okay!
Despite the popularity of sister romance stories in anime, stories about blood-related sisters are extremely rare. I can only think of two of them: Yosuga no Sora and the excellent Koi Kaze.
There are some big reasons why stories of sibling love are usually represented as stepsisters instead of actual blood relations.
- It’s taboo… but with a safety valve. You get the best of both worlds!
- Censorship and broadcast friendliness. TV stations and publishers do have rules they have to follow, even in Japan.
- Wish-fulfillment for otaku. Imagine a cute girl suddenly joining your family, calling you Onii-chan, and having a crush on you? And you can have sex with her, since she’s not related by blood!
The Birth of Japan’s Sister Complex
I believe Japan’s fascination with anime stepsisters started with a popular 1980s manga and anime called Miyuki, by the creator of the baseball manga Touch. Masato has a crush on the prettiest girl in his class, named Miyuki. But he has a younger sister, also named Miyuki, who recently returned to Japan after living abroad for many years. As the story unfolds, Masato finds himself pulled towards both girls, especially since he’s not related to his sister by blood. Eventually, he breaks up with his girlfriend and marries his sister, with the support of their father.
(I can’t prove it, but I’m convinced that Miyuki from The Irregular at Magic High School having a huge brother complex is a shout-out to the classic Miyuki manga.)
Ranking the Best Anime Stepsisters!
Let’s check out some of the best anime stepsisters in this post!
Yume Irido from My Stepmom’s Daughter Is My Ex
What happens when your father gets married, and suddenly you have a nubile stepsister… who you dated for a while back in junior high school? It happens all the time, in anime!
Saki Ayase from Gimai Seikatsu: Days With My Stepsister
One anime stepsister who really caught fans’ attention was Saki Ayase, from the thoughtful anime Gimai Seikatsu. The show (and novels) delved into the tropes of why people expect step-siblings to jump into bed together… right before Saki and her new Onii-chan Yuuta jump into bed together. Maria and Mio from Shinmai Maou no Sister Testament
There’s no way my stepsisters can be devil girls! That’s the thrust behind The Testament of Sister New Devil imouto anime. It’s one of my favorite fan-service anime series.
Hina and Rui Tachibana from Domestic Girlfriend
What do you look for in a stepsister? Someone who will take an interest in you, and offer you love and support? Maybe someone who will wrap her legs around you when you try to pull out of her?
Akiko Himenokouji from the Oniai: As Long as There’s Love, It Doesn’t Matter If He Is My Brother, Right? Imouto Anime
I loved anime in the early 2010s, which I’ve come to refer to as the Great Heisei Imouto Boom. Back then, it seemed every other anime involved a younger sister who wanted to have relations with her Onii-chan. One enjoyable show was Oniai, about a girl with the hots for her older brother. In classic anime fashion, she thought they were related by blood, but she had actually been adopted from a young age, something that’s reveled at the end of the show.
Nao Takanashi from I Don’t Like My Big Brother at All!
Another fun imouto-themed anime was Oniichan no Koto nanka Zenzen Suki ja Nai n da kara ne!!, a show about a (mildly annoying) younger sister who decides to make her brother her husbando after learning they’re not related by blood. It was a fun imouto anime with lots of sexy fanservice!
Sagiri Izumi from Eromanga Sensei
After making fans obsess about sister-fucking with Oreimo, writer Tsukasa Fushimi came up with Eromanga Sensei. Sagiri is the younger step-sister of Masamune, and she obsesses on and off over her Onii-chan. Who was your favorite girl from this show?
Citrus Gave Us the Lesbian Anime Stepsister We Needed
When Yuzu’s mother gets married, suddenly Yuzu has an older sister named Mei, who is very eager to form a special relationship with Yuzu.
Riko-nee and Ako-nee from Kiss x Sis Are S-Rank Anime Stepsisters
Finally, the classic that can’t be beat: Kiss x Sis. Keita grew up with his two loving step-sisters, Riko and Ako. Because they’re not blood-related, the two girls love to tease Keita sexually. Sometimes he gives as good as he gets.
