After what feels like years of waiting, Chainsaw Man — The Movie: Reze Arc is finally here in North American cinemas! With a million different trailers from MAPPA, you might think you know exactly what you’re getting into. Still, this arc truly has some unexpected emotional beats and a heart-wrenching conclusion. But you’re not here for a Letterboxd review; you’re here for Chainsaw Man cosplay!
In celebration of Reze Arc hitting the big screen, we’re showcasing the best ero cosplay of Makima and Reze. There are some light spoilers ahead, but nothing critical about the film’s plot/ending, or how it relates to the rest of Chainsaw Man.
Chainsaw Man Cosplay: The Psychology of a Denji
Chainsaw Man, for all its focus on devil hunting, is really about Denji and his attempts to grow into a functional person from a stunted beginning. Fending for himself with nothing but Pochita (RIP doggy, we miss you), Denji truly resembles a beaten and starved dog. All he wants is hot food, a safe place to sleep, and someone to love him.
It’s that final part, love, that Denji has most twisted. With the raging hormones of a teenage boy, he conflates his sexual desire for Makima and newcomer Reze with his need for unconditional love. We’ll touch on that in our next section — for now, here’s your cosplay introduction to Reze!

Reze: Innocence and Teenage Dream Personified
Reze is best defined by the way she isn’t like Makima. She’s girlish and a little bashful, dresses modestly, and gently teases Denji, never treating him as anything except another person. Reze’s appeal lies in her perceived innocence. Her design motif, featuring a white blouse and often accompanied by spring flowers, all suggest the heady naivete of youth.
Denji’s not just a pure horndog. His tragic upbringing has left him emotionally stunted. And circumstances having thrust him into the bloody world of devil hunting haven’t given him much time to mature. People like Himeno and Aki aren’t the role models he needs. Reze worms her way into Denji’s heart by offering the things he missed — a teenage romance, a chance to be young and dumb, to experience moonlit nights and first kisses that don’t end in swallowing vomit.

Makima: The OG Dominatrix of Chainsaw Man Cosplay
Denji’s attraction to Makima is immediate, all-consuming, and inarguably toxic. The opening visuals of Season 1 even show Makima feeding Denji poisonous-colored mushrooms. Makima treats Denji like a dog, and he still comes barking back for more. The shattered, wounded part of Denji craves protection and safety so much that it quickly becomes intertwined with his teenage hormones, and his infatuation with Makima becomes locked in.
Makima’s cosplay generally focuses on that controlling aspect of her nature — including her penchant for chains and collars. To say anything more would risk spoiling anime-only fans; however, it’s worth noting that Tatsuki Fujimoto, the author of Chainsaw Man, is very deliberate in his use of visual metaphors.

Makima: Maturity and Manipulation
Chainsaw Man — The Movie: Reze Arc pits Makima against Reze, contrasting Reze’s innocence with Makima’s maturity. Denji psychologically needs to fill in the missing parts of his life and be a regular teenager. Then again, he’s so damaged that giving up independent thought and doing whatever Makima says is equally appealing.
Ultimately, like far too many things in Denji’s life, the decision is not his to make. The illusion of choice is also a running theme throughout Chainsaw Man, and situations constantly force our poor Denji to make the best of bad situations and live with the consequences.
