One anime I’m enjoying in the Autumn 2025 anime season is Towa no Yuugure, aka Dusk Beyond the End of the World. It’s about a boy who time-skips 200 years and meets a powerful android who looks exactly like the love of his life from his own time. Keep reading to see whether this show is worth watching!

It’s funny how certain themes in anime come in clumps. One season we might get nearly identical “battle high school” stories airing at the same time (Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry and Asterisk War), while other times we might have situations where a girl is sick and needs a boy to insert a suppository into her butt in back-to-back seasons (Domestic Girlfriend and Why Are You Here, Teacher?). This season we’ve got multiple “after the end of the world” stories, including Touring After the Apocalypse, and today’s offering, Towa no Yuugure.
Towa no Yuugure: A Post-Apocalyptic Japan 200 Years in the Future
The story follows Akira Himegami, who wakes after an earthquake shatters the cryogenic pod he’s been in for 200 years. As he tries to make sense of the strange world he’s awakened into, he hears a single familiar word: Hakodate, a city in southern Hokkaido. So is this Japan, in the future? No, he’s told: the organization that currently rules the world, called OWEL, did away with old concepts like “countries” long ago. We flash back to 2038, with Akira talking to his foster sister Towasa, the daughter of the scientist who took him in when his parents died in a crash. Towasa is a genius AI researcher, working on something called the LC Project, which allows humans to upload their consciousness into advanced androids.
Back in his new present, Akira encounters OWEL soldiers and is powerless as they prepare to kill the family that took him in. Just then, a powerful android appears and cuts up the soldiers with a beam weapon. Her name is Yuugure, and she looks just like Akira’s crush Towasa from two centuries in the past.
Yuugure has just one request from Akira: that he marry her. But why does she look just like Towasa, even carrying the same ring Akira gave her long ago? Sorry, Yuugure says, that’s “classified information!”
A Compelling Futuristic Anime Concept
I’m a huge fan of futuristic anime and of series that go out of their way to engage in detailed world-building to tell a richer and more complex story. Towa no Yuugure certainly fits the bill. It’s also got lots of commentary on the potential negative repercussions of AI.
The animation by P.A. Works is outstanding, and the character designs are all gorgeous to look at. As usual with stories like this, it’s great to see modern places we can visit today in a post-apocalyptic setting, overgrown with vines and other vegetation. As the characters travel south, towards the ruins of Tokyo, we should see more and more familiar locations.

Dusk Beyond the End of the World has Great Waifus
Towa no Yuugure centers on two main heroines. First, we have Yuugure herself, a powerful android who can manifest weapons at will and defeat her enemies easily. But just because she’s powerful doesn’t mean she’s boring. She’s an android that likes to eat (even though she doesn’t need to), and can even get drunk. Best of all, she’s got an interesting secret: what is her connection to Towasa from Akira’s past?
Then we have Amoru, a super cute tanned waifu dark-skinned girl who loves to draw, and is searching for a picture book that her parents drew but which has been banned by the OWEL authorities. I like her dedication to creating art, which is a very human thing to do. This makes her a complementary character to the android Yuugure.
It’s a shame only one girl can ‘win’ romantically, right? Not so fast! In this future, a new kind of marriage has evolved called ehlsea, which can easily include a man and two women. So maybe the story will end with all three characters getting married!
