One of the more peculiar aspects of modern anime fandom is the tendency for fans to become infatuated with younger sister characters. If there’s any on-screen spark between a brother and a sister whatsoever, you can bet an army of “shippers” will appear out of nowhere and start filling the usual image boards with “Rule 34” related art. Today, let’s explore where the fascination with anime sisters came from, and rank the most popular ecchi sisters for you.

Why Do Anime Fans Sexualize Sisters in Anime?
Part of the attraction of anime has always been that it was free to tell stories that wouldn’t be allowed in other mediums. Cities could get destroyed during a battle, main characters could die on-screen, and the camera might cut away to a sexy shower scene, all in the same episode. Anime has been a place where taboo sexual topics can be explored, too. The first episode of the classic 1984 Cream Lemon hentai featured the story of forbidden sex between a sister and brother.
The history of little sister fetishism in anime is connected with the bankruptcy of major anime retailers like Suncoast Video and Musicland in 2006. This was the bursting of the Anime DVD Licensing Bubble, as online piracy began to eat away at physical media sales before streaming had begun. This was also why we lost Newtype USA, too: with no retailers to carry it, the magazine eventually folded.
In the aftermath of the bursting of the anime bubble, the industry shrank. Anime studios were forced to look inward and think of what kind of content they could create that anime buyers — now mostly limited to the domestic market inside Japan — would respond to. And over time, that answer came to be sexualized content that appealed to mostly male fans.
Why Do Fans Like Anime Sisters So Much?
You might have encountered the word siscon, which is short for “sister complex.” This is a wasei eigo (made-in-Japan English word) coined in 1917 by Japanese researcher Yoshihide Kubo. He posited that Laertes from Hamlet had an unnatural love for his sister Ophelia. He named this phenomenon “sister complex,” likely wanting to get some of the attention that Sigmund Freud was getting over in Vienna.
Some reasons why fans love “shipping” anime sisters include:
- Animators know anime little sisters are popular, so they go the extra mile to give us visual fan service.
- Incest might be a topic many react negatively to, but when watching a fictional story, it’s totally unrelated to us. It’s not my sister I’m reading naughty doujins about!
- Anime fans dislike double standards. Why is it okay for Game of Thrones to build a gripping story around twincest, but not anime?
- Social media communities create feedback loops where fans compete to make danker and danker memes, which brings in more fans.
- Have you never liked something ironically? I sure have.
Who Are the Best Ecchi Anime Sisters? Let’s Rank Them!
I did my research and came up with a list of the most popular ecchi anime sisters for this blog post. Note that these are all blood-related sisters because “it’s only hot if they came from the same womb.” There are no weaksauce stepsisters on this list!
Karen Arararagi from Monogatari Series
Even if you’re a casual fan, you probably remember the moment when Koyomi Arararagi penetrated his sister’s body…with a toothbrush. This legendary scene (which was 12 years ago, yikes!) really left a mark on fans.
Sagiri from Eromanga Sensei
Another popular anime sister is Sagiri, a pure girl who is secretly a famous adult manga artist. In true anime tradition, she was outshone by all the other girls in the series.
Kirino from Oreimo
An influential anime based on a light novel series that had fans thinking about brother-and-sister relationships every day. The ending triggered more than a few fans, who wanted Kuroneko to win instead.
Miyuki from Irregular At Magic High School
Anime series based on light novels have their fingers on the pulse of fandom. One that helped define the modern fascination with sex between blood-related siblings was Irregular At Magic High School. Tatsuya and Miyuki are full brother and sister, although she had certain “genetic tuning” to give her more abilities.

Nezuko from Demon Slayer
Another anime sister fans couldn’t help shipping was Nezuko from Demon Slayer. Because when an anime becomes as popular as this one, it’s a given that fans are going to unleash their collective imaginations and create sexy art of her. J-List even had a popular parody onahole of her in stock for a few months!
Koi Kaze Defined Brother-Sister Love
A fascinating anime from 2004, this tells the story of what happens when a man meets a girl and is attracted to her…only to find out that she’s his full-blooded sister, who he hasn’t met in years. It’s a deliciously complex story, and I wrote a long review of it here!
Shiro From No Game No Life
One of the best brother-and-sister teams in anime is Sora and Shiro from the No Game No Life anime.
Mikan from To Love-Ru Darkness
If you want some hot snatch that’s blood-related, look no further than Mikan from To Love-Ru. The good thing about this anime is, it’s so sexy, you don’t need doujinshi!
The Best Anime Sister? Go Watch Yosuga No Sora
An epic anime based on a hentai visual novel, the show explores the relationship between two orphaned twins, Haruka and Sora. This show took no prisoners!
Aki Sora Gave Us the Best Hentai Sister
The hentai genre is naturally cut out for exploring themes of brother-sister attraction. We got many great works like Uchi no Otouto Maji de Dekain Dakedo Mi ni Konai? (official ero toy link) and Imouto Paradise to enjoy. But the best brother-sister ero story has to be Aki Sora, based on a manga by Masahiro Itosugi. His other manga, A Wish For Sister, is also legendary for reasons.
Yuki Suou from RoshiDere
The girl who won the heart of the anime community in the Summer 2024 anime season is Yuki from Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian. She pretends to be childhood friends with main character Masachika…but is secretly his sister.
Ruby from Oshi no Ko
Finally, the anime sister who takes the crown for shipping in the minds of fans is Ruby from the “idol anime” (and ridiculously detailed procedural about how stage plays are produced in Japan) Oshi no Ko. Fans are patiently waiting for Ruby to hook up with her twin brother Aqua so their mother, Ai Hoshino, can be reborn!
