Aharen-san wa Hakarenai (Aharen Is Unfathomable) is a cute rom-com about two people who have trouble connecting with others. The first person has a scary face that hides a kind heart, and the other is a cute girl who keeps to herself because she lacks a sense of distance. Their cute story continues in Season 2. We’ll see if they’re perfect for one another when this anime series returns at an undisclosed date.
Asato Mizu released the original Aharen-san wa Hakarenai manga series between January 29th, 2017, and April 30th, 2023. Shueisha published all seventeen volumes in Shonen Jump+. Felix Film’s anime adaptation premiered on April 2nd, 2022.
Our two fated couple and their invested teacher are as follows:
- Reina Aharen — Inori Minase (Itsuki Nakano from The Quintessential Quintuplets). A quiet girl who lacks a sense of distance. She can quickly become clingy, which makes people uncomfortable.
- Matsuboshi Raido — Takuma Terashima (Lent Marslink from Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout). A guy with a stoic and scary face unsuited to such a kind and gentle person. He reaches out to Reina and earns her friendship very quickly.
- Ms. Tobaru — Kana Hanazawa (Ichika Nakano from The Quintessential Quintuplets). Reina and Raido’s classical Japanese Literature teacher. She closely monitors the budding couple as a source of wholesome entertainment.

A Different Sense of Distance in Aharen-san wa Hakarenai
Matsuboshi Raido has difficulty making friends. He has a scary face, and people mistake him for a troublemaker. But contrary to appearances, he’s a nice guy who wouldn’t hurt a fly. Raido’s desk neighbor is quiet and relatively short. His first meeting with her resulted in an unusual friendship. Reina Aharen has trouble discerning proper personal distance, so her previous friendships ended. She got too close too quickly, and things got awkward. However, Raido has no such problem with her eccentricities.
As the series continued, Reina eventually became close enough to start dating Raido. They become a genuine couple, even making Ms. Tobaru, their teacher, swoon. Distance — or a lack thereof — doesn’t become much of an issue. Reina would start making real friends, and Raido’s reputation would improve. Even the tall girl, Mitsuki Oshiro, who had assumed Raido was scary, becomes his friend.
