Since anime simulcasts didn’t exist in 2007 (Crunchyroll was still a few years off at this point), I didn’t watch the Lucky Star anime as it aired in Japan. It wasn’t until a few years later that I could finally sit down and enjoy the series and get acquainted with its main character, Konata Izumi. Now, over a decade later, fans of the classic series will get a chance to catch up with what’s been happening with Konata in a brand new spinoff manga that will launch in the spring 2023 issue of Mitaina! magazine. They published this announcement in the same magazine, which also published the continuation of the original Lucky Star manga by Kagami Yoshimizu that had been on hiatus since 2014.
The temporary title of the upcoming spinoff manga is Konata 31 and, as you might have already guessed, it will follow an adult Izumi Konata fifteen years after the main story’s events. Yoshimizu is credited with the original work, but the manga itself will be drawn by Haruki Hongō. Unfortunately, no other details or previews were provided for Konata 31. Still, you can be certain that I will peel my eyes for any further announcements regarding this series in the coming weeks and months.
I’ve always had a soft spot for Konata as a character, as she reminds me a lot of myself growing up (I… um, wasn’t a good student). While I’m unfamiliar with where the story in the manga left off, I felt quite satisfied with where the anime ended. However, in the years since I first encountered Lucky Star, I’ve always wondered where the main characters ended up in their adult lives, with Konata always having the largest question mark on her head. This new spinoff series will hopefully answer many questions while providing some nostalgic laughs for all of us who encountered Lucky Star in our youthful years.
