Welcome to the Wizards of the Coast and Carrot Show, where we talk about WotC’s newest carrot each week. This week, Street Fighter in your Magic: the Gathering. Who’d have ever thunk it?
Secret Lair is WotC’s drop product, printed to fill demand through pre-order and, ostensibly, highly collectible. It’s a premium product that has a very limited run and “no kids, we’re not reprinting the set — buy it now!” This time around, WotC has teamed up with CAPCOM to bring your favorite brawling buddies; Ryu, E. Honda, Chun-Li, and several other famous Street Fighter characters. Yes, you can now have your Street Fighter cake and eat it with a deep dish of Magic: the Gathering.
The art is truly amazing, and I imagine a few Street Fighter fans will buy them just to display them. But don’t take my word for it, here they are, in their full-color glory.
The Secret Lair x Street Fighter set is available for pre-order through secretlair.wizards.com, and you can order them in regular or foil format. Pre-orders opened on February 18th and run until March 18th, 2022.
Magic Beyond Street Fighter?
Now I wonder, what team-ups will we see next? I’m sure we’ll see WotC continue to mine anime and manga, and well they should. There’s gold in them there hills! I know plenty of us are shouting “sellout!”, but WotC is a company that has to make money, and, if you ask me (and even if you didn’t), they’re doing a good job of it. WotC has posted consistent growth, thanks to Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: the Gathering both doing exceptionally well. If some of that good luck rubs off on anime studios or Japanese game developers, then it’s a very good thing all involved. That includes fans.
So what are your predictions? Navigating licenses is probably a headache, but can we expect to see Mario on a Magic card? Attack on Titan? Dark Souls? Throw your ideas in the comments, below.
