Why Do You Love Japan? J-List Customers Tell Us!

Peter Payne by Peter Payne

in Your Friend in Japan

After spending years learning the language then living in Japan for 30 years, I can truly say that I love Japan. Besides Star Wars — which is inspired by Japan in many roundabout ways — the main theme of my life has been trying to get closer to this weird and wonderful island country, and helping others do the same through J-List. I asked J-List’s Facebook and Twitter followers to share why they loved Japan, and here are some of the reasons we received!

Why Do I Love Nihon? Hmm, Let Me See…

While pulling together everyone’s feedback from social media, I tried to boil down the core reasons that I personally love Japan. I would say there are five:

Maken Ki!
Maken-Ki!

The Japanese people. If there’s a more polite, humble and hardworking people on Earth, I can’t think who they might be. Living in Japan has been an extremely pleasant experience for me over the years, and in the course of running J-List, it’s been great to be able to work alongside such hardworking people.

You're Under Arrest
You’re Under Arrest

The Safety and Peace of Mind Japan Offers. Being able to walk anywhere in a city, to lose your wallet and know that it will almost surely find its way to the local police station so it can be returned to us, even in the chaos of Shibuya’s famous Halloween rowdiness, is outstanding.

Japan Cherry Blossom

The Blending of Old and New. On my first day here I was marveling at all the things they had in my local Seven-Eleven. I went behind the convenience store to explore some more, expecting to see more modern buildings, but was surprised to find a small Buddhist temple that was several hundred years old. The ability to find modern products, architecture and technology standing beside beautiful buildings of cultural significance is something I’ll never stop loving.

The Fruit Of Grisaia Is A Reason Why I Love Japan
The Fruit Of Grisaia

Japanese Pop Culture. Although it started out as a weird underground hobby, practiced by early fans who didn’t mind gathering once a month at their local anime club to watch cartoons in a language we couldn’t understand with no subtitles, anime has become the “default OS” of many people around the world, uniting us in ways not seen before. I love the many ways anime, manga and gaming culture have changed the world, telling stories that no other medium could ever tell. Also, the way ecchi visual themes are built into Japan’s pop culture offer a welcome emergency steam valve for people living in sexually repressed countries.

Yuru Chara Funassyi

The “Otherness” of Japan. I love the way Japan always offers a source of totally new ideas, whether it’s the random things we see on Japanese TV or completely new kinds of stories we encounter in anime. I hope Japan never stops being such a weird country.
