Back in March, Netflix revealed their plans of releasing 40 new anime series to their service in 2021 alone. Already some of the planned releases have come to praise and some have disappeared into the nether (and are better off staying there… yeah, I’m looking at you Way of the Househusband). A few highly anticipated titles are still to come.
One of those titles that fans are anxiously awaiting is the seinen action series, Record of Ragnarok. We knew it was coming at some point this year, but an exact release date had yet to be revealed until Monday, May 24th, when a brand new promotional video hit the Internet. It revealed a June 17th global release date.
Adapting a manga written by Shinya Umemura and Takumi Fukui, and illustrated by Ajichika, the series has been serialized in Monthly Comic Zenon since November 2017, with ten volumes released in Japan as of March 2021. Studio Graphinica will animate the series with Masao Okubo handling the directing duties. Kazuyuki Fudeyasu is creating the series composition and Masaki Saito is adapting the character designs for the anime. Meanwhile, the background music will be composed by Yasuharu Takanashi. The opening theme song, titled “Kamigami”, will be performed by Maximum the Hormone, and the ending theme, titled “Fukahi”, will be performed by SymaG.
What’s interesting about the staff behind Record of Ragnarok is how varied all of their previous experience is. A great example of this is director Okubo, whose previous experience including Onegai My Melody and PriPara, which aren’t exactly series that are bursting with testosterone like this one is. Writer Fudeyasu is another odd duck within the staff. While they have plenty of experience with seinen titles (including a series no one has ever heard of called Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure), none of them have the same level of hype for a fighting anime that this series appears to have.
Regardless, I know that I’m looking forward to checking this one out when it hits Netflix in the latter half of June.
