Well, guess it’s time to update my Beginner’s Guide to Hatsune Miku.
On Thursday, February 25th, entertainment website Deadline exclusively reported that the popular virtual idol will get her own animated series at some point in the future and a line of webtoons and comics. No details were released regarding when the animated series would premiere or who would produce it, but, in a statement to the website Crypton Future Media, overseas licensing director, Guillaume Devigne said “We believe we have found a unique way to create an original animated series that stays true to the essence of Miku, who is a perfect vessel for fan creativity and unlimited opportunities for artistic expression. It will be a major moment for Miku and her fans around the world.”
According to the article, fans will finally be able to enter and experience the “Mikuverse” with a series that will combine live-action, animation, and music. They also claim that the story will be modern and entertaining (we’ll see about that), and feature a fresh look for the iconic mascot.
I’m honestly shocked beyond shocked that this hasn’t been a story much sooner. I mean, if you had told me a few years ago that Super Sonico would get an animated series before Hatsune Miku I would’ve laughed. It’s always seemed like such an obvious choice to give Hatsune Miku her own animated series, and yet her makers never pulled the trigger until now. It makes one wonder why now is the perfect time to make the jump, rather than a few years earlier when Hatsune Miku was arguably at her peak.
Though it’s worth noting that even if this project goes off without a hitch, this won’t be the first time that Hatsune Miku has been in an anime, as she actually appeared in a “blink and you’ll miss it” cameo in the second season of the series Sayonara, Zetsubou-sensei.
