Fans of Diana Rigg, the star of the 1960s spy thriller The Avengers, got sad news today, that the actress had passed away at the age of 82. While many articles are appearing marking the passing of the former Bond Girl and “Queen of Thorns” from Game of Thrones, I’m sad because the woman who inspired one of the most legendary anime characters in history, Fujiko from Lupin the Third, is no longer with us.
Lupin the Third was one of the first anime many of us were exposed to, and we were immediately drawn to the enigmatic character Fujiko Mine, the sometimes girlfriend, and sometimes betrayer of gentleman thief Lupin III. Created in 1967 by artist Monkey Punch, the character was based specifically on Diana Rigg.
I’ve got a post with trivia on the history of Fujiko Mine here.
Although the original Lupin III manga featured several different girls all named Fujiko, they solidified into the same character after the release of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, the 6th James Bond film, because the manga artist was so taken with the character of Tracy Bond, who also played Emma Peel in the classic British spy thriller Avengers. Fujiko’s trademark skintight bodysuit is even based on the one Mrs. Peel wears.
I guess I’ve got some random hobbies. When I’m not watching anime 24/7 so I can write blog posts about them here, I sometimes like to pick odd and interesting TV shows and get into them, like the time I watched 1967’s The Prisoner.
One day I decided to check out the original Avengers, another fun thriller from the golden age of British spy programs, which ran from 1961-1969. The episodes were charming, filled with ridiculous Cold War plots that are laughable today, but were great fun. Naturally, the episodes starring Diana Rigg as Emma Peel (whose name derives from the “man appeal” the writers hoped she would bring to the show) were my favorite.
The actress got another famous role as Olenna Tyrell in Game of Thrones, which was a great character for her. “Tell Cersei, I want her to know it was me,” are totally badass lines to exit a great career with.
If you like the character of Fujiko, one anime I recommend is the experimental A Woman Named Fujiko Mine, by genius anime writer Mari Okada. It focuses on the character of Fujiko including the traumas early in life that made her the woman she became. Where Hayao Miyazaki turned Lupin into a more family-friendly anti-hero, this series goes back to the Monkey Punch original tradition with lots of nudity and sex.
