J-List has a lot of customers in Switzerland, and they were disappointed at not being able to receive anime figures, doujinshi or other cool products from Japan during the health crisis. As the situation has improved and international flights resumed, both EMS and airmail shipping has finally been restored.
The anime world has always had a close connection Switzerland thanks to Heidi, Girl of the Alps, the legendary series made by later Ghibli founder Isao Takahata, which was also worked on by other visionary anime great as Yoshiyuki Tomino (who would go on to create Mobile Suit Gundam) and of course Hayao Miyazaki. Part of the World Masterpiece Theater series based on classic Western children’s literature, Heidi served as a bridge between East and West, and was the first exposure many in Europe got to the world of Japanese animation.
I’ve got a Swiss and Italian friend who’s always telling me how the Swiss consider the Heidi, Girl of the Alps anime to be part of their national heritage. It’s an important anime to Japanese of Mrs. J-List’s generation, and whenever a TV program showing the famous scene where Clara gets up out of her wheelchair to walk for the first time, I know I’ll have to hand a tissue over to my wife, who’s crying tears of joy.
Germans also love the Heidi, Girl of the Alps anime, something I learned when attending a small anime convention in Koblenz. The Heidi theme started playing in German, and everyone in the room started singing it heartily. Afterward the Japanese version played. My wife and I were the only ones who could sing it in Japanese, so we sang as loud as we could for everyone.
