The Irregular at Magic High School: Shizoku Kaigi-hen Goes Manga

While it isn’t exactly a household name, The Irregular at Magic High School is an absolutely massive franchise. The light novel series has been running since July of 2011 and currently has a whopping 30 volumes, plus 10 side-story volumes. The lengthy and still-ongoing story has received a number of adaptations over the years, including an anime adaptation that will be getting a second season later this year. The world of The Irregular at Magic High School manga is set to get bigger sooner than that, though, as a new manga adaptation of the series is set to premiere this March.

The March issue of G Fantasy magazine, published by Square Enix, announced that a manga adaptation of the Shizoku Kaigi-hen (Master Clans Conference) arc of The Irregular at Magic High School is set to begin running in the magazine in its next issue, on March 18th. The Master Clans Conference arc of the series ran from volume 17 until volume 19. Takeda will be responsible for drawing the manga adaptation, with Kana Ishida credited as character designer.

The previous manga entry in The Irregular at Magic High School adapted the Yotsuba Keishō-hen (Yotsuba Succession) arc, and debuted in the same G Fantasy magazine on December 18th of last year. The manga is an adaptation of the 16th novel in the series. Tsuna Kitaumi is the artist for that manga, with composition credits going to Fumino Kayashi and Chiaki Nagaoka. Kitaumi previously drew other manga adaptations of the series like  Mahōka Kōkō no Rettōsei: Double Seven-hen, Mahōka Kōkō no Rettōsei: Kyūkōsen-hen, and Mahōka Kōkō no Rettōsei: Nyūgaku-hen.

Yen Press is the overseas distributor of The Irregular at Magic High School, having just recently released the 16th volume of the story in paperback and e-book formats. They also publish Yu Mori’s spinoff manga of the series, The Honor Student at Magic High School. The overall book and manga franchise has 15 million copies in print, and the original novels have 10 million copies in print.

A description of the series, according to Yen Press:

The year is 2095. Magic has been tamed as another form of technology, and the practice of magic is now a rigorous discipline. Brother and sister Tatsuya and Miyuki Shiba are just about to start their first year at the renowned First Magic High School of Japan. But the school’s ironclad rules mean that the brilliant Miyuki enters the prestigious Course 1, while her older brother, Tatsuya, is relegated to Course 2 — and that’s just the beginning of their troubles!
