February is here, and that means something big for Boy’s Love (BL) fans. Blue Lynx’s first of three BL films planned for release will be hitting theaters across Japan. Based on the on-going manga of the same name, Twittering Birds Never Fly -the clouds gather- is making headway with collaboration campaigns and pop-up shops all over Tokyo for its release on February 15th. Animated by Studio Grizzly, the story follows a high ranking yakuza known for his shameless and highly provocative sexual demands and his newly assigned bodyguard who is unable to sexually aroused in any sense. In part with promoting the film, members of the Japanese piano trio-group, Omoinotake, gave their commentary on the project and their experience with performing the film’s theme music.
Emoraki (Bass/Chorus): “We are very honored to have worked on the theme song for such a noteworthy film. We wanted to give a watery feel to the song — it related to all of us growing up in rainy areas of the San’in region (Shimane Prefecture). When we finished reading the original manga we had a lot to say for writing the song. We felt a lot of emotion for a short-lived love, one that you know cannot come true, that you try to suppress, but still can’t help having hopes and feelings for — a contradictory feeling. For that reason, we named the song ‘Moratorium.‘ I hope our music will speak to the hearts of those who hear it.“
Leo (Vocals/Piano): “In some aspects, I had avoided trying to express emotions such as sorrow in music, ever since childhood. Yet when it came to this song, such emotions were the first to be felt. Writing this song allowed me to be more expressive with myself and I am very grateful for that. It became the first newly written song this year, and a song with a great deal of affection. I am proud to be part of this.”
Dorage (Drums/Chorus): “At first glance, the characters in the manga seemed cruel and cold, but as the story progresses I noticed that I was loving the weakness, vulnerability, and human side that was shown. I’m really looking forward to seeing how the song works with the film in the final cut.”
Omoinotake formed in Tokyo in 2012, although all three members knew each other originally from junior high school in Shimane prefecture of western Japan. The group performed in numerous events in Tokyo, particularly in Shibuya. Their first album, ‘Sofar,’ was independently released in 2017. The following year they put out two mini-albums titled ‘beside‘ and ‘Street Light.’ The latter’s supporting tour sold out. The group’s concept is an emotional act inspired by Soul and R&B and influence by contemporary Tokyo culture.
The single for ‘Moratorium‘ will be released on February 19th, just a few days after the film. To commemorate the release, a special edition of the single will feature cover art drawn by the original manga artist of Twittering Birds Never Fly, Kou Yoneda.
After Twittering Birds Never Fly, Blue Lynx will move forward in their release schedule with the upcoming continuation film of Given.
